He couldn’t do that to her. It wasn’t fair. And if she rejected him, he’d hate to have to find out the hard way, that his love wasn’t enough to keep her here. If it were true love, then you set the other person free. Didn’t you? Because he only wanted her to be happy.
“Will you…” she hesitated.
“What,” he prompted.
“Will you come and visit me?”
“Sure,” he lied. Well, maybe it wasn’t a lie. Maybe he would visit her. But he knew, even if they tried to make the long-distance thing work, it’d fail in the end.
She stared at him for so long he began to wonder exactly what it was she was thinking. “Maybe I…” She shook her head. “No, never mind.” Then she reached up and kissed him. And whatever she’d been about to say was lost in the throes of passion.
There was a screech of tires and Dale looked up just in time to stop his ATV from crashing into the rear of Steve’s vehicle as he pulled up outside the machinery shed. His mind had been so lost in thoughts of Daisy, he’d hardly noticed they were at the lodge. Time to get his head back into the game. He needed to get ten horses saddled and ready to go before the trek was due to leave in half an hour.
