“How is it outside?” I ask quietly.
He shakes his head. “It’s bad, Aiden. According to the last weather report I heard, it’s a category 5 and tearing through the city. There are twenty-foot waves on the coast and A1A is completely washed out right now.”
I grimace. “Jesus. Is everyone okay?”
He shakes his head. “I’m not sure. A lot of guys took their families and left town, and some of the support staff is holed up at the arena.”
“You think we’re safe here?” I ask, glancing around.
“I think so.” He glances over my shoulder. “Good morning, Jordan.”
“How bad is it?” he asks.
“Well, let’s just say if we have another storm like this, I’m not staying. However, since we’re in the thick of it now, let’s go have some breakfast. Generators are running, Flora says there’s oatmeal and muffins she made yesterday. And of course, coffee.”
We make our way to the kitchen and as we’re making coffee, Felix comes in yawning.
“Hurricanes very loud,” he says. “I sleep like shit.”
“I haven’t been to bed yet,” Remy counters. “So I feel your pain.”
“You should get some rest, boss,” I say. “Now that we’re up, we can make sure everything is okay. If anything changes, I’ll wake you up.”
Remy hesitates but then nods. “You’re right. I’m no good to anyone if I don’t at least get a few hours.”
“Go on. I’ll pay attention to everything going on.”
“All right.” He claps me on the shoulder. “See you in a few hours.”
“Hungry, boys?” Flora looks bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as she serves us oatmeal and puts out muffins, butter, cream, and sugar.
“Smells great,” I tell her.
“Good morning.” Hana comes in looking as beautiful as ever, even though we probably only got five or six hours of sleep.
“Morning.” I get up to greet her, softly pressing my lips to hers. Our eyes meet and she smiles.
“I missed you,” she murmurs against my mouth.
“I’ll make it up to you when the storm is over,” I whisper back.
“I have blueberry muffins,” Flora calls out. “And?—”
She’s cut off as a loud bang makes the house rattle.
“What the fuck was that?” Jordan mutters, looking around.
“I think a tree just landed on the roof,” Remy says, coming back in a second later.
“Fuck.” Felix puts down his coffee. “We can do something?”
Remy shakes his head. “There’s nowhere to go. All we can do is hang tight and pray the roof holds.”
“What about the safe room?” I ask, reaching for Hana and pulling her against my side.
“That’s where we’ll go if I feel like we’re not safe.”
“This is bullshit,” Jordan grumbles. “Alaska is sounding better by the minute.”
