Katie

Three years later

Standing in the front yard of our new house while our moving truck drove away, I wrapped my arms around my middle and stared out over Lake Majestic Falls and the Adirondack mountains surrounding us.

Rugar slipped his arm around me. “Glad to be home?”

“Yes. I’ve missed it so much. How about you?

Ready to coach?” Though he was only thirty, he’d decided to retire from the pro hockey after the finals a few months ago.

We both missed home and hated all the travel.

For the past eight years it had only been the two of us, but we were ready to start a family. We wanted to start that family here.

Of course, our old high school had been looking for a new hockey coach. It had seemed like a sign, and they snapped up Rugar without any hesitation.

“I’m definitely ready,” he told me. “But we have the rest of the summer before we need to think about that.” That was part of the thing with his pro contracts. With the money he’d been paid, and good investments, we could do just about whatever we wanted for the rest of our lives.

We’d both decided to use our degrees and work for the Majestic Falls school system. I’d be teaching second grade and he’d be teaching math, as well as coaching.

“Hey, neighbors!” I groaned, turning my face into Rugar’s chest.

“Hi, Kyle,” he called. My husband didn’t point out that we weren’t actually neighbors. My brother lived on the other side of town. He ran his own accounting business and specialized in doing taxes for people. It sounded like a nightmare job to me, but he liked it.

“Hi Kyle,” I echoed.

“Mom and Dad actually sent me,” he said.

“I volunteered because they’re watching the kids while I drove slowly, very slowly over here.

The parents know you’re going toe be swamped with unpacking and trying to get yourselves settled enough to sleep tonight, so they want you to come over to dinner so they can make sure you eat. ”

I looked up at Rugar. “It is family dinner night.” I glanced over at Kyle. “They could have called.”

“Did you miss the part where I volunteered?” he laughed. “And now I’m going to drive very slowly all the way around the lake. Kids. Don’t have them.”

I shook my head at his ridiculousness. He had three under three, two of them being twins, but he loved them with everything in him. He was only being dramatic.

He waved goodbye, and Rugar steered me toward the house. “I wanted to show you something.”

“What’s that?” I asked as we walked through the cardboard box jungle.

“This.” He ushered me into the bedroom. Our bed was put together. Somehow, he’d managed to find our bedding. Our bed looked like an oasis in a desert of chaos.

“How?”

“The movers put the ped together, then while you were talking to Mandy and also directing the guys where to put the office stuff, I did the rest.”

“You’re the best. Have I told you that lately?”

“I seemed to remember something to that effect in our hotel room this morning. I don’t mind hearing it again.”

“Do what you did this morning, and you will,” I promised.

Rugar swept me up into his arms and carried me to our bed. Putting me down, he crawled over me. “Mrs. James, that’s definitely something I’ll agree to, every day of our lives.”
