“The horse might spook?”
Grayson chuckled and introduced me to Hank, his foreman. I followed behind him slowly until the land opened up, and Hank and the horse sped up into a gallop.
Horses were beautiful to watch. But they scared the shit out of me. They were huge with a normal size person standing next to them, but my four-foot-ten-inch body could probably stand directly under its belly.
No, thank you!
When the cabins came into view, Sypher was sitting on the porch steps waiting for me.
“Is Dante here?” I asked as I got closer.
“No, he took Danika over to the clubhouse.”
“I’m surprised you let her go over there. You know that woman let’s Dani call her mom, right?”
“She is Danika’s mother,” Sypher stated. He turned and walked into the house, and I stared after him. Val had given me a little information about how Dani came to be. From what she said, Dante didn’t know Dani’s mom.
Jane had kidnapped Dante when he was in college, forcing him to be with a woman he didn’t know. Dante and Sypher had only learned about Dani a few months back. It was why Val asked me to watch over them.
“So, what are you doing here, Kytten?” Sypher asked as he went to the counter in the kitchen to make coffee.
“I followed Dr. Jefferson here.”
Sypher swung around and glared at me. “Why?”
“Val called from New York back in December and asked me to go to Oklahoma City and watch over her granddaughter.” I shrugged.
His shoulders dropped. “Ok, that makes sense. I should have known Val would send someone. Why are you still here? Dante and I are here. Jane is dead and our daughter is safe. So is Amber.”
“Honestly, I don’t know why I’m here. But Val asked me to stay and keep an eye on Amber until she can be here.” I looked round the cabin and thought about how nice it was. A little rustic, but it was so quiet. “Also, Irene is here.”
“She is. When I put Irene here, I had no idea Amber was here. This wasn’t where I put Amber.” He handed me a cup of coffee and we sat at the small table.
“Then why is she here?”
“It’s a long story that I won’t go into right now. What did you need me for?”
“The Death Dogs are in Diamond Creek.”
Sypher set his cup down and grabbed his computer. “What do you mean, they’re here?”
“There are about a dozen of them staying at the motel. I saw them last night when I got back and then had an altercation with one this morning.”
His eyes snapped to mine as I took a sip of the hot liquid. “Define altercation.”
I shrugged one shoulder. “He propositioned me, and I threatened to cut his tiny dick off.”
“Kytten,” Sypher groaned.
“What the fuck was I supposed to do? Let him rape me?”
Sypher rubbed his hands over his face. “My guess would be you’re supposed to lie low and not draw attention to yourself.” Yea, well, that was unlikely. Especially when it came to Cash.
“Well, they were outside when I left my room. Also...”
When I bit my lip, he asked, “What?”
“I got pulled over for speeding last night.”
