“They’re fine and worried about you. Maybe you could write them a letter that you can give me and I’ll take it to them.”
I sighed. “Okay.”
“There’s one problem with our plan,” Vix said. “You’ll have to find a way to getto our meeting spot without being seen. If we agree on the route and everything, that might be too dangerous, so I’d rather you find your own way. We don’t want anyone to overhear us, even though Mick thinks that shouldn’t happen.”
“We’ll figure something out,” I said as Theo walked out of the bathroom wearing only a towel. A surge of desire shot through me, and he seemed to be aware of theeffect he had on me, because he flashed me a wide smile. If only I had the time to run my hands up and down those strong muscles and perfect abs...
“Chiara?” Vix said, and I blinked. “You there?”
“Yeah, I got a little distracted. Sorry.” I shook my head at Theo, who was barely containing his laughter. “Can you repeat what you said?”
I had to look away from Theo as she started explainingwhere we should meet. “Okay. Got it.” After I ended the call, I focused back on Theo. “I hate to have to say this, but you should get dressed.”
“Are you sure?” His eyes danced with amusement.
“Yeah.” I gave him a sad look. “We have to meet with Vix and the Cobras. They want us to leave the city.”
“We’ll see about that,” he said, and dropped the towel. Damn. My gaze was transfixedon him and I clenched my legs together, trying to stop the heat that was pooling inside me. Yeah, as if that was ever going to work. He glanced over his shoulder at me before he put on his boxers, a smile playing on his lips. Unbelievable. I preferred him teasing me rather than threatening my life, though.
When we were ready to go, Theo made sure the hallway was clear, and then we hurriedto the stairway. Since we weren’t going to come back here anyway, it didn’t matter that much if someone spotted us now, but we still avoided looking at the cameras, and we rushed through the back exit. Once we were outside, we made our way to the park.
“We should get some weapons,” Theo said when we were walking down an alley. I’d put big sunglasses over my eyes and tied my hair into a ponytail, and Theo had his shades on too.
“Yeah, I know, but where?” I didn’t like being without a weapon, but it wasn’t like we could walk into the first shop and buy some.
“I know of a place. It’s not far from here.”
“What if Walter discovered it too?” If Walter expected us to go for weapons somewhere, he might have sent the Spiders to watch every place that sold them, and they’d alert himif we showed up.
“I guess we’re going to find out,” he simply said. “You should hide and wait for me here.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” I didn’t want us to separate, not even for a second. Walter and the Spiders were looking for us, and I wouldn’t even have a way of finding out if something had happened to Theo until it was too late for me to do anything about it.
“I’ll befine.” He must’ve seen the worry in my eyes, and he pulled out his gun. Getting hold of my hand, he pressed the gun into my palm. “Take this. I’ll be back in an hour. If I’m not, go to Vix and the Cobras immediately.”
“But...”
He placed his finger over my lips. “No buts.”
“Promise me you’ll just go get weapons and won’t do anything that would put your life at risk.”
“Being outhere is already putting both our lives at risk, so I’m not sure I can...”
“Promise me.” I rested my hand on his cheek, my eyes boring into his. “Promise that you won’t rush into danger unnecessarily.”
He finally nodded. I leaned forward and brought my mouth to his. His lips were hot against mine, and after we broke apart, I watched him disappear down the alley. Clenching my hand aroundthe gun, I glanced around me and went to find a good hiding place.
Chapter 21
I NEARLY COLLAPSED from relief when my gaze fell on Theo. He was carrying a duffel bag, and I wondered if he’d brought more than just weapons. His shoulders relaxed when he spotted me, and after glancing around him, he hurried toward me.
“Did you bring me any presents?” I grinned as he put the bag down in front of meand started to unzip it.
“Plenty.” He opened the bag and revealed a bulletproof vest, which he pulled out and handed to me. I took a peek inside the bag as I took off my jacket so I could put on the vest. There was another vest, two black baseball caps, and a whole lot of guns inside.
“Where did you get all this stuff?” I narrowed my eyes at him.
“From a friend.” He shrugged out ofhis jacket and I noticed his shirt was ripped in one place.
