Calypso takes a breath, then she turns her face so I can see her smile. “Ha,” she says. “I know.”

Calypso

“I love you.”

The soft words enter Lex’s song at exactly the moment the lyrics would say them. It strikes me in an oddly beautiful way, stealing my breath. After all this time. He’s finally said it.

Glancing at him, I can’t help myself. “Ha.” I watch the way his smile broadens and his eyes dance. “I know.”

Of course you doreflects back at me, unquestioning. Because that’s how we are. Brilliant and knowing. A little too alike to be made of anything but dust from the same exact star.

Pressing my lips together, I shake my head, and face forward once more. “Alexander?”

He moves. I feel it even before he’s sitting beside me, whispering in my ear, “Yes?”

Will love never cross our lips in reality?

Is it always an act?

Will it never be true?

If I told you I fell, would you just ask, “For who?”

Or may I dare to dream?

Might I believe it’s true?

If I told you now, would you say…

“I love you, too.”

He turns my lips toward him, the most delicate touch. It doesn’t even disrupt the song. Before he kisses me, he can’t help himself.

“Ha,” he says. “I know.”
