CHAPTER 19
DAXTON
M y life had been nothing short of an oxymoron. On one hand, in my personal life, things were fucking fantastic.
I finally got the girl. Against all odds, I was able to convince her to give us a fighting chance.
It had been the best three weeks I had ever experienced in my life. The woman had a way of turning my mood completely around. Just by the sight of her, my spirits were immediately lifted. I never knew that this was what falling in love felt like.
But now, I was sitting behind my desk analyzing all of the data that my warriors and healers had given me. The attacks had increased; it was only a matter of time before they hit harder than they ever had.
I stared at the archives that had been sitting on my desk for the past four hours to no avail. It was all gibberish to me. I had no idea how those wolves from Blackstone could read and write High Degraine.
The walls were working, but there were cracks. We didn't have much time anymore. We had a limited amount of time to figure out what the hell they wanted the moonstone for and how we could stop them.
I blinked, trying to remove the sleep from my eyes, but it wasn't working. My mind was tired, and from all the training I had been doing with the cadets, my body was spent. Not to mention my nights that consisted of pleasuring my mate until she came so hard that I could feel her tremors against my body.
A knock came at my door, and I felt my wolf stir to life. I didn't need to guess who was behind it simply from his reaction alone.
"Come in, baby." I leaned back into the expensive leather of the chair and waited. The door opened, and she popped her head inside with a plate in hand. "Now what's this we have here?"
She all but skipped toward me with a smile on her face. She looked to be freshly showered with her damp hair in a messy bun on top of her head. She wore one of my large shirts and boyfriend shorts that cupped her petite little ass wonderfully.
I pushed away from the desk to give her room so she could come sit on my lap. She placed her ass on my legs and leaned toward me before presenting the bowl of pasta in hand.
"You missed dinner," she pressed her lips against mine briefly before pulling away. "I understand you have war knocking at our doorstep, but you need to eat too."
I sighed and nuzzled my nose into the crook of her neck. I breathed in her sweet scent and allowed my wolf just a moment of reprieve. When I pulled away, I had a fork shoved in my face and a pointed look on my wife's face.
"I can feed myself."
She shook her head. "I know you can, but I like when I get to take care of you. Now eat, I made it myself."
"Yes, ma'am," I loved when she was bossy. She never let me forget that she may be my mate, but she was very much an alpha at heart. The fire within her was never going to die, and I would never dare to try to douse it ever again.
I opened my mouth, and she fed me a forkful of creamy goodness.
"Wow, did you really make this?" I swallowed and waited for another forkful of food.
She arched an eyebrow my way. "Do I not look like I can cook?"
"Do you want me to answer that?" I teased her. "May I remind you that you burnt a boiled egg last week."
Her cheeks heated. "We promised never to talk of that day again. It was an error in judgment, and also you were to blame."
She fed me another forkful; this was some damn good pasta.
"Me? How?"
"Umm, were you not the same man that was keeping me in our bed longer than I was meant to be? I kept telling you I had something on the stove."
I remember that day well. We had spent the night doing a movie marathon, though many movies were not watched. We had preoccupied ourselves with other activities that were far more...stimulating for my mind.
"Oh sorry," I wasn't the least bit sorry. "But did you not enjoy my love? I think that we could use one of those little breaks right now, don't you think?"
I was already reaching for her inner thigh before she shoved food in my mouth again.
"No sex, focus." She poked the tip of my nose. "How can I help?"
"Really? Can we not give the paperwork a rest? I think we are long overdue for some alone time, no?" I kissed up the side of her neck. "Just a few minutes of distraction."
She turned her head and pressed her lips to mine in a heated kiss. Our mouths moved together in perfect sync.
Kissing her felt like magic. It was unlike something I had ever felt in my entire existence. She was my calming force and the equilibrium that I desperately needed. Whenever I had her near me, then I would find my stability.
It was one of the many reasons I loved her.
Yes, I loved this woman. I had yet to tell her those three coveted words because I didn't want to scare her. I was ready to fall in headfirst, but I could still tell that she had some reservations. The mark was a big factor in her hesitance.
I would be lying if I said I wasn't silently cursing myself for that mark, but then on the other hand, it had been the one thing that had saved her.
We pulled apart completely and utterly breathless. I leaned my forehead against hers; my cock was hard as a rock and ready to take her.
I wanted her. There had not been a single day where I didn't want this woman. She was my kryptonite, and I was more than happy to be at her mercy.
I went to kiss her again, but she pulled away from me. When I tried to press my lips against hers, she pulled away from me again.
"Woman." I slapped her ass gently. "Give me a kiss."
I tried to press my lips against hers, but yet again she pulled away. I saw the slight glint in her eyes, and I couldn't control the smile that found its way to my lips.
"We need to focus, Daxton." She chuckled and hopped out of my lap. The pasta bowl was empty, and her eyes were already set on the documents and archives in front of me. "Sex later, saving our people now."
"Babe..." was I sulking? Yes. Would I continue to sulk? Absolutely. I tried to reach for her again, but she swatted my hand away. "Ow?"
"Yes," she said, not even sparing me a glance. She picked up a piece of paper. "Tell me what the archives said. You've been in here for hours, so I'm sure you've looked over them."
Well, there was my boner gone. Nothing said goodbye to sex drive like historical documents that were hundreds of years old.
I shook my head in disbelief. "They are saying nothing. It's all in that old language that I don't understand. But from the data I gathered from my warriors, it seems that the moonstone's a crucial element to their plan."
But that was all the information we had concluded months ago. It felt like we were running in circles. We could fend the rogues off for as long as we wanted, but it didn't stop them. They were relentless in their pursuit to defeat us.
If we could figure out their plan, then maybe we could get one step ahead.
She rolled her eyes. "You mean High Degraine. That is one of the first lessons we learn in our classes when we train to be alphas. How do you not know how to read this?"
I sometimes would forget that she was the daughter of an alpha. Though our physical training may have differed, all alphas had to learn of the old ways. It was almost like a tribute to the ancestors who came before us.
Our kind was hundreds, if not thousands, of years old. A lot of history flowed through our veins, and it was our responsibility to keep some of the old customs alive. I, unfortunately, had been one of the alphas who could have given two shits about High Degraine. After my mother's passing and losing my father, all I cared for was the protection and safety of my pack.
"I skipped that class," I said. If I was being honest, I slept through those classes, and by the time I was 17, I had stopped attending them altogether. It was a language that was dead, and no one used it anymore. Why did I need to learn it?
"Look at this," she said, pointing at a paragraph that looked like gibberish to me. When she saw that I was completely blank, she rolled her eyes. "You have no idea what you're looking at, do you?"
I shook my head. "Nope."
I caught a glimpse of her mark on the side of her neck. Her scar had fully healed and was now starting to fade into her skin. Every time I caught a glimpse of her, my heart would do a little flutter every now and again like I was a little child.
Who knew that all it would take to soften my ice-cold heart was a fiery Blackstone she-wolf who held a knife to my throat the first day we met?
She sighed and sat back down on my lap with the book in hand. She moved her finger over the pages until she came to a certain paragraph.
"This tells the story of the creation of the moonstone," she said. She pointed to the page that was full of symbols. "It says the moonstone was created from the celestial stars and the dust of the moon. The goddess breathed life into the two elements which created the moonstone, and this is why it glows from deep within when it is faced with the rays of the moon. It's why we are our most powerful during the full moon.
The moonstone contains the same life source that was breathed into us by our goddess. So this means that the moonstone has the ability to create life, to create wolves."
I blinked, my mind trying to keep up with her train of thought. I could hear the wheels turning in my mind as my brain tried to piece everything together. Slowly, the large puzzle pieces were finally starting to show the whole picture.
They had attacked Blackstone first because they believed that they had the moonstone. Then when they figured it wasn't with them, they came after us. This stone can create wolves, but it was the goddess who formed the flesh of our bones. So why would the rogues need the stone?
My mind ticked and moved until finally...
"Shit," my eyes widened and I looked to my mate, but she was already looking at me. "Are you..."
"...thinking what I'm thinking?"
We nodded in unison.
"The rogue king wants to create rogues," I said. It was all making sense. The dots were finally connecting. The poison they had used was incredibly potent and manufactured, and it had been embedded in the fangs of the rogues like a dagger. "If my guess is correct, then they plan on turning wolves and possibly humans alike into rogues. To create a sort of hybrid species that would be under the command of the rogue king."
This was all far darker than I had believed it to be.
"We need your father here. War is coming to Blood Moon, and we are going to need every force in our artillery to face off with these monsters. Our entire existence depends on it."
