I’d rather die first.
Tapping out my passcode, I hand the phone back and he silently takes it.
“What are you doing?” I mutter. If I can just keep him talking…
“Shut up.”
“Liam—”
“Shut the hell up, bitch.”
I decide not to push him. I have to keep reminding myself this isn’t going to work. Liam has no clue what he’s doing. He isn’t a professional criminal.
Not like Dante.
Whatever Liam’s up to, he finishes about a minute later and snaps out his next order. “Drive.”
I don’t want to obey, but keeping him happy is my best chance for staying alive. I just need time to work out how I can ditch him and avoid catching a bullet in my brain.
“Okay,” I whisper, twisting my keys to start the engine. “Where are we going?”
“North.”
“I need a road, Liam.”
The barrel of his gun shifts to my cheek and the chill from the metal makes me freeze before I can put my car in drive. Liam is unhinged, desperate, and sloshed. That combination is bad news for me.
“Take the highway. We’re leavin’ town, Vee,” he says simply, as if we’re discussing the weather. “We’re gonna be free.”
I swallow past the lump in my throat and force myself to speak. “How?”
“You’re taking us to Canada. But I have a stop to make before we hit the border.”
“We can’t leave—” He presses the gun deeper into my skin and I wince.
“Did I ask your permission?”
“I don’t have a passport,” I whisper.
“I’ll handle that.” I can hear the smirk in his voice as he continues, “We’re getting’ married, baby.”
“I’m already married,” I can’t help but snap. “Or did you somehow forget?”
“Not for much longer,” Liam sing-songs. “You’re about to be a young widow.”
