“These are the calls Cate made and received beginning several days before her trip to France, and including the day of the accident.”
There were over two dozen calls, at least a half dozen to two different numbers. One she recognized—Diana Jodion's number at the university.
It wasn't surprising that Diana's number came up more than once.
“What about these other numbers?” Kris asked. There were several more over several days, according to the log times and length of calls shown.
“That will take a bit more work. They fall into different areas, and some of them may be private.”
“I need names,” Kris replied. The numbers by themselves meant nothing, unless she called each one to find out who they belonged to.
“And a map of all the locations, along with the dates and times of the calls,” James added.
There was no response from Innis, then, “I don't think I can do that...There's a lot of built-in security, especially after everything that's happened all over Europe the past few years, encryption, security devices.”
James reached around her and entered a series of letters and numbers at the keyboard.
“Use this,” he told Innis. “It will help you get the information.”
Innis made a sound on the other end of the call.
“This is crazy shit!” he exclaimed. “This is spook stuff. The mates I know won't go near this stuff after that whole political leak thing with the Yanks. How do you know about this?”
“Don't ask, and don't stay on the site too long. Get out as soon as you've got the information.” Then he added, “And cover your tracks. You don't want strangers paying you a visit in the middle of the night.”
There was another expletive. “Right,” Innis finally managed. “Print the list,” he told them. “It has a timed destruct as a precaution.”
“How do you know about this?” she asked as she hit the print key.
“I pick things up here and there,” James explained as he headed for the printer at the counter across from her, grabbed the print-out when it came through, and then folded it and stuck it in his jacket. On-screen, the list suddenly burst into cyber flames, and was gone.
“There's something else,” Innis added. “It looks as if someone else has been taking a look at Cate's phone account.”
“What have you got?” James asked.
“I found something when I was taking a look around, a break-in and an information string. It might be nothing, an anomaly...”
James frowned. “Take another look, check it out. I want everything.”
“I'll get back to you,” Innis replied.
“Not at this location. Use my cell number when you have something.”
“We need to go,” he told her when the call ended, glancing toward the clerk.
CHAPTER
THIRTEEN
“What is it? What's happened?” Kris demanded as they left the café.
“Give me your cell phone.” James told her as they crossed the street.
It was mid-week, well after the early morning commute. A local tram stopped, passengers disembarking as others boarded, the driver waiting for a sanitation truck to move ahead before entering traffic.
“What are you doing?” she demanded as he dropped her cell phone to the sidewalk and then drove a boot heel into it. It shattered, the screen splintering into dozens of pieces.
“Insurance,” he replied.
