Chapter Seventeen

Pain exploded at my neck as Jamie’s fangs sank deep. A scream died in my throat, the sound reduced to a choked gasp. My fingers clawed at his shoulders, nails breaking against his stone-like skin.

“Oh god,” he moaned against my neck, his voice vibrating through my flesh. “So much better than I imagined.”

I tried to push him away, but it was like trying to move a mountain. His grip tightened, one hand tangling in my hair to yank my head back, exposing more of my throat.

The initial sharp pain faded into a horrifying pleasure as he drew deeply from the wound. Each pull of his mouth sent waves of dizzying sensations through my body like pure ecstasy.

A moan escaped my lips as I found myself wrapping my legs around his waist and pulling him to me. My body demanded more pleasure from him.

“Such a good girl, quickly learning how good this can feel when you stop fighting.”

“Please,” I begged, no longer sure what I was begging for.

A rumble in his chest urged him on until I felt that wave crash through me. Mortification flooded me as I realized what I had gotten off on.

“Stop,” I whispered, the word barely audible.

Jamie pulled back just enough to look at me, my blood staining his perfect lips. His eyes had transformed completely into glowing crimson orbs.

“I can’t,” he said simply before diving back into my neck.

My legs dangled uselessly off the desk. The room began to spin as he drank deeply. I could feel my life draining away with each swallow.

“Exquisite,” he murmured against my skin. “Like sunshine and honey.”

I felt myself growing colder, my extremities numbing. The edges of my vision darkened.

“Why?” I managed to ask.

Jamie pulled back again, studying me with those inhuman eyes. Blood—my blood—dripped down his chin onto his bare chest.

“It’s nothing personal,” he said with a casual shrug. “Man’s gotta eat. A lonely woman at a dating event seemed like an easy way to pick up dinner.”

He smiled, revealing teeth stained red. “Though, I wasn’t expecting you to be so utterly delightful. I don’t usually lose control like this. Pity, you would’ve made a perfect source.”

My head lolled back, too heavy to hold up. The ceiling swam above me, patterns forming and dissolving in the ornate plasterwork.

“You taste like nothing I’ve had in centuries,” Jamie continued, his voice distant now. “So pure. So alive.”

He bit again, this time at my wrist. The pain barely registered through the growing numbness.

My thoughts scattered like leaves in a storm. Images flashed before me—my mother teaching me to ride a bike, my father’s proud face at my high school graduation. Mysti curled on my lap during late-night study sessions. Amelie laughing as we painted each other’s nails in our living room.

Jamie moved to my other wrist, greedy for more. “Usually the fear makes it sweeter, but tasting the pleasure through your veins really made this... to die for,” he commented between swallows. “Sorry, horrible pun, terrible timing.”

More images flashed though my mind: the tattoo designs I’d never create, the children I’d never have. The degree I’d never finish. All the potential possibilities for my future evaporated with each drop of blood he stole.

“Just a little more,” he groaned, returning to my neck.

My body felt impossibly heavy as his grip anchored me to the desk. I couldn’t feel my legs anymore. My arms hung limp at my sides.

More memories flashed—my first kiss behind the bleachers to a jock who wanted to ‘try a goth’, the day I got accepted to Witherford, and the feeling of a tattoo needle piercing my skin.

“So good,” Jamie murmured, his voice thick with pleasure. His lips detached themselves once again only to come to my mouth. He bit into my lip as he kissed me. My blood dripped into his mouth as his tongue assaulted me. It was weirdly passionate, even though this situation was anything but.

A surge of strength hit me. This was my last chance. I could feel the fight leaving me every second that passed. I gathered all the energy I had left and bit his tongue, hard. Jamie growled, pulling his head back quickly as blood sprayed between us.

“You shouldn’t have done that, Dove,” he spat. His hands grabbed my chin and pushed my head back, bearing my neck to him once again.

I couldn’t fight anymore as he fed on my neck once again. I could no longer even find the will to be afraid; a strange peace settled over me as I accepted what was happening.

This is how I would die. Not old in bed, surrounded by loved ones. Not in some dramatic accident. But here, on a desk, drained by a monster wearing the face of a man I’d desired.

My heartbeat slowed, each thump fainter than the last. Jamie pressed himself against me, chasing the fading pulse, determined to take every last drop.

The room dimmed further. The pain receded. In its place came a profound acceptance—almost relief. No more disappointments, no more trying to find my place. No more feeling like an outsider.

As darkness claimed me completely, my final thought was oddly comforting.

At least someone finally found me irresistible.
