Epilogue
One Year Later
“Mrs. Knight, your husband’s here to see you.”
Shay smiled, pressing the speaker button on her desk phone. God, she never tired of being called that. “Please send him in, Jackie.” Seconds later, her executive assistant opened the door, grinning as Gideon strode past her. Leida Investments was still small, but now Shay could afford a staff. Even if thatstaff was just Jackie. Still, the business was steadily growing, and Shay couldn’t be happier.
Well, she took that back, her smile warming as Gideon crossed the room and took her into his arms. With the news she’d just received not minutes ago, she could indeed be happier. And she was.
Her lips parted under his, and as always, his kiss kindled the desire that only he could stir withinher. She tilted her head back farther, opened her mouth wider, and he dived deeper. By the time he lifted his head, their rough breaths echoed in the office.
“I’m supposed to be taking you to lunch,” he reminded her with a sensual smile that was reflected in his eyes. “But with you kissing me like that, hell, moonbeam, you mightbelunch.”
She chuckled. “You’re bad. And I refuse to keepyour mother and sister waiting. I had to twist Bridgette’s arm to let me have Olivia for an afternoon, so nope, not missing lunch.”
Gideon’s eyes brightened at hearing his sister’s name. And no wonder. Olivia had come a long way in a year. After hearing the whole story about what Trevor had done to her, Bridgette had decided to take her under her wing. And Olivia hadn’t had much of a choice.Bridgette had bulldozed her way into Olivia’s world, and assumed the role of big sister, as Shay had. Soon, she had Olivia in the food truck, working beside her, and to Olivia’s surprise, she’d enjoyed it and was wonderful with people and the business side of it. Bridgette had taken her on as a partner, and now the two of them were planning to buy another truck.
And Trevor... A sliver of sadnesswormed its way into Shay’s happiness. It happened whenever she thought of him. She hadn’t shared the file she had on him; he was her brother, and no matter what he’d done, she couldn’t destroy him. But things like that had a way of exposing themselves. He and the senator were in trouble with the law and SEC now. Soon, Trevor would lose not only his wife, the family business and reputation, but also his freedom. He’d caused a lot of pain and loss to people both emotionally and financially, and now he faced the consequences of his actions. She loved him, but she also hadn’t seen him since the night of his engagement party.
“Are you sure about lunch?” Gideon asked, cupping her chin and tipping her head back for another press of his lips to hers. “I’m sure Mom and Olivia would understand.”
“Yes.” Shay laughed, then cradled his cheeks between her palms. “I’m hungry.” She paused. “And especially since I’m eating for two now.”
Shock blanked his features. Slowly, understanding dawned, and his black eyes glittered.
“What?” he rasped. “Are you telling me that we’re...that you’re...”
“Pregnant,” she finished with a wide grin, slipping her arms around his neck again. “We’regoing to have a baby.”
“Moonbeam,” he whispered, awed. With a reverence that brought tears to her eyes, he stepped back, and her arms fell to her sides. He knelt in front of her, his big hands spreading over her still-flat abdomen. “Jesus, Moonbeam. How can you continue making me the happiest, richest, most loved man in the world?” He dipped his head, brushed his mouth over her belly. Risingto his feet, he pulled her into a tight, hard embrace and buried his face in her neck. “I love you, Shay. I love you so much.”
“I love you, too. Forever.”
