Page 74 of Bitter Desire
We rounded the corner, the anteroom of the Cairn was behind those doors, and just beyond that the streets of New York. She stopped, one hand on the obsidian door, and looked at me.
“Hurry, Law.”
The second I hit the pavement outside the club I had my phone out.
“Sir?” Taylor’s voice answered.
“I’m in front of the club. I’m done here.”
“Understood. Just around the corner.”
I ended the call and turned, facing the busy intersection just a few hundred feet away. All around me the city was coming to life. Tribeca was lit up and full of people just getting started for a night out. I glanced at my watch. Only two hours had passed since Honey and I had crossed The Cairn’s threshold. My fingers twitched and then curled into a fist. The bag I held, the one I’d packed for our stay, that had been waiting for me by the door of the club, dangled from my free hand.
My girl was gone. The whole world had changed in those two hours.
Don’t let her stay in this place alone.
A minute later the familiar sight of my car's sleek lines came into view. It pulled to a stop in front of me and Taylor exited. I knew he was prepared to open the door for Honey, seeing as I never had him do it for me and I didn’t miss the way Taylor’s eyes widened slightly when the man saw I was alone.
I nodded at him and opened my door, knowing he was discrete enough not to ask where Honey was. “The office.”
He nodded. “Right away, sir.”
I slid into the car and closed the door behind me, my phone back in my hand. I dialed another number while I worked to put together the sequence of events that had led to me being here, alone, while Honey was in that fucking club.
She isn’t safe here.
Her mother had been there. Zeus was involved. I knew Zeus was interested in my girl. Connie hadn’t been in on it. Her earlier warnings were echoing through my fucking brain now, making my pulse race and my adrenaline spike. I was going to fix this, but I needed help to do it.
“Hey, Handsome,” Charlaine greeted me. “What do I owe the pleasure?”
“Shit’s fucked. I need you to come to my office.”
She fell silent. “Like... in person?” she asked, and I knew why she was asking that. We never met in person, not anymore. We always kept it remote to keep her safe and us from being connected to each other. The less ties you had in Charlaine’s world, the world that I had left, the better.
“Charlaine…” I sighed, and she knew it was serious.
“Fine, I’ll be there in an hour.”
The line went dead and I sighed, leaning my head back against the seat. Charlaine coming to my office was not the move I wanted to make as Lawson Sokolov, CEO of Law Acquisitions, the hottest fucking company on the market, but I was done being that man.
That man had lost Honey. He hadn’t focused on the right shit. He was not the one that could keep her safe.
Hurry, Law.
But Law? Law would be able to do it just fine, and he’d make everyone pay. I didn’t care if I had to give up everything I’d built. I’d do it, just as easily as I was going to destroy Zeus’s world.
Brick by fucking brick. I was going to end it, but most importantly...
I was going to get my girl back.
