Page 50 of Beyond Her Reach (Bree Taggert #10)

Kneeling at Todd’s side, Matt heard the sirens and Bree’s commands in his earpiece. He understood. She was doing the right thing. She couldn’t risk the EMTs’ lives. They had to wait until deputies and troopers determined the situation was safe before allowing the medics to enter the house.

But helplessness floored Matt. He wanted to secure the house himself, but he couldn’t leave the basement for fear that one of the shooters would attack Todd while he was vulnerable.

And right at this moment, Cady was in the hospital, in labor with their child. Matt couldn’t even consider the chance that Todd wouldn’t get there. After all his sister had been through, that would break her.

He checked Todd’s pulse again. Still beating. Matt tugged the blanket higher. There was nothing else he could do, and the forced inactivity gave him anxiety.

He stared up at the open doorway, willing help to arrive.
