Chapter 18: The Stranger
Story: Before The Horizon Fades
Evelyn’s heart raced as the man from the convoy approached. He was coming closer, and with each step, the weight of their decision pressed down harder. She motioned for the group to stay low, her fingers hovering over the handle of her knife, though she didn't draw it. Not yet.Liam’s eyes met hers, filled with the same uncertainty she felt. He was ready, but only just. There were no guarantees in this new world—no guarantees that this man wouldn’t open fire on them the moment he saw them. The stranger was close now, almost within range. He was tall, his features hardened by years of surviving in a world that had crumbled. He wore a weathered tactical vest, and his boots crunched loudly against the dirt. Evelyn could see a rifle slung over his back, but it didn’t seem to be aimed at anyone, at least not yet. He was just... walking, scanning the area with a practiced, steady gaze.“Stay put,” she whispered to Mara, who was crouching next to her, her breath shallow. "Don’t make a sound."Mara nodded, her grip tight on the makeshift weapon she’d picked up—just a rusty pipe—but she trusted Evelyn’s judgment. The man stopped just outside their hiding spot. Evelyn could feel her heartbeat in her throat as she held her breath. She had no idea what he was thinking or why he was here, but if he came any closer, they would be forced to reveal themselves. And if he was hostile... they wouldn’t have time to fight back. The man paused, his head tilting slightly as if he was listening for something. His gaze swept over the area, scanning the rubble and the half-destroyed buildings around them. Then, he took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, his shoulders relaxing just a fraction.Evelyn’s grip on her knife tightened. She couldn’t make out his expression, but she knew he was considering something. Was he wondering if someone was watching him? Did he suspect they were hiding nearby? Or was he just a man trying to survive, the same as them?In that moment, time seemed to stretch. She was trapped between two choices—stay hidden and risk him discovering them, or take a chance and step out to confront him. Finally, the man turned and began to walk back to the convoy. It was like the pressure lifted, but only for a moment. Evelyn let out a shaky breath, her hand still clenched around the knife handle, her mind racing.“Wait,” Harris murmured from behind them, his voice tense. “He’s not gone. He’s just waiting for something.”Evelyn’s stomach twisted with unease. What did that mean? Why wasn’t he leaving? Then, as if on cue, the man stopped, turned around again, and called out in a low, gruff voice, “I know you’re out there. You might as well come out now.”The silence shattered like glass, and Evelyn’s pulse spiked. She froze, panic washing over her like a cold wave. He’d known. He’d known they were there this whole time.“Nowhere to run,” the man added, his voice firm but not threatening. “And I’m not here to hurt anyone. I’m just looking for survivors.”Evelyn’s mind raced. This man wasn’t making demands; he was just... waiting. She exchanged a quick glance with Liam, whose face was set in a determined expression. He was ready, too. It seemed like this might be their only chance to find out more about who this man was and what his intentions were.Slowly, Evelyn rose from her crouched position, her movements deliberate. The others followed suit, one by one, emerging from their hiding places. The man’s gaze immediately landed on her, his sharp blue eyes taking in her every movement, assessing her. He didn’t seem surprised, more... resigned, as if he had expected them to reveal themselves eventually. He said nothing at first, just waiting.Evelyn took a breath, her voice steady despite the uncertainty gnawing at her. “Who are you?”The man’s lips curled into a half-smile, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Name’s Jack,” he said, his voice rough, as if it had been a while since he’d spoken to anyone. “I’m not with any group. Just me and a few others. We’ve been traveling for weeks, scavenging, looking for supplies... people. Figured I might find someone here.”Evelyn felt a mixture of caution and curiosity rise in her chest. Jack didn’t seem like the kind of person who would wander the wasteland without purpose. He had to know something.“You’ve been looking for people?” Mara spoke up from behind Evelyn, her voice steady but filled with suspicion. “What for?”Jack’s eyes flicked toward her, his expression unreadable. “Food. Medicine. And, well... people who can help us. There’s safety in numbers these days. More mouths, more hands.”Evelyn’s mind churned. This was the first lead they’d gotten in days—maybe even weeks—about other survivors, and if Jack wasn’t lying, they might be able to form some kind of alliance, a new group to survive with. But she wasn’t naïve. People out here could be just as dangerous as the chaos itself.“What makes you think we can trust you?” Harris’s voice cut through the tension. He stepped forward, his hand still gripping the makeshift rifle he’d crafted from scrap metal. His skepticism was clear.Jack’s expression hardened for a split second, but he didn’t draw his weapon. “You don’t. But you don’t have much choice either. If you want to keep going, I’ve got resources. But we’ll need to stick together if we’re gonna survive.”Evelyn looked back at the group, her gaze sweeping over each of them. She could feel the weight of their collective fear, the desperate need for something—anything—that might give them hope.“How many of you are there?” she asked, her voice careful.“Five,” Jack replied. “Two in the convoy, two more on foot. We’re spread out, looking for shelter and supplies.”Five. It wasn’t many, but it was something. Evelyn felt the tug of possibility, of the chance to finally find some kind of stability. But she still didn’t trust Jack completely, not yet. There were too many unknowns.“Let’s take it slow,” Evelyn said, her voice steady. “We’ll go with you, but we need to see where you’re headed first.”Jack nodded, his eyes calculating. “Fair enough. Follow me. But if you try anything funny, you won’t make it past the next mile. I’m not here to play games.”His words were blunt, but there was no malice behind them—just a cold, hard truth. Survival wasn’t about friendship anymore. It was about trust, and it had to be earned, bit by bit.Evelyn took a step forward, Liam right beside her, and the rest of the group following behind. The convoy was still waiting in the distance, but for now, they were only a few paces away. Whether this was a step toward salvation or another trap, Evelyn couldn’t say. But it was the only option they had left. And in this world, sometimes the unknown was the safest place to be.
