“So, that’s it.” Chrissie sighs as her arms fall to her sides. “That’s all I know.”
I frown. “This guy claims to be my brother, and my fathercould have a son he doesn’t know about. I need to know more.”
A look of anticipation settles on Chrissie’s face. “Do you want me to contact him? Because I’ll do it right now.”
“No,” Devon butts in. “Let me look into him first and make sure he’s legit.”
I bite my lip and try to control the urge to call Jett Cross this very moment but then think about all the ways I was duped by Albert Humphries. “That’s a good idea. But I want to know without a doubt Jett is who he says he is before we tell Dad. Keep this quiet for now. I’ll take the heat for it later.”
Chrissie claps her hands silently. “This is so angsty. The secret-baby trope is my favorite. Whatever you have to do to run a background check, hurry the hell up. The anticipation is killing me.”
“Killing you?” I mock her. “I could have a brother. If it’s true, I want to know why Allen kept it from my dad and me.”
Devon turns me in his arms. His expression is no less grave than it has been the last few days. “We’ll get to the bottom of it, but we need to get back to Winslet. I can multitask on the plane.”
Yes, we need to get back.
Hugh Bancroft is alive.
The Winslet Chief of Police is being tapped.
Janie is nowhere to be found.
Turner put kill orders on Roman and Albert. As much as I hate them both, I don’t want anyone to die.
And I may have a sibling.
I give Chrissie a quick hug and turn to Devon. “Let’s go. I need to know everything there is to know about the man who claims to be my brother.”
CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
REVENGE
Devon
Ihelp Harlow into the back of Dean’s Tahoe and climb in after her. The flight home was a busy one, though not the good kind of busy like the flight there. No one was naked and no orgasms were had.
I will take a naked Harlow in my arms any day over dealing with the shit that’s coming at us from all directions.
I slam the door as Dean turns to me from the driver’s seat. “You two are fucking drama magnets. I haven’t seen this level of activity since I was in the military. The Winslet PD is not cut out for this kind of shit. This is fucked up on a level our small town is not prepared for, proven by the fact I’m using a burner phone.”
Harlow ignores his rambling. “Thank you for the ride.”
Dean smirks and gives her a chin lift. “Just so you know, my entire softball team calls me Mr. Bigshot. I now have the T-shirt to prove it. Thanks for that.”
Harlow bites her lip. “Sorry.”
“Can we get a move on?” I ask. “I’d rather not sit on the side of the runway. I have no idea where Bancroft is.”
“Neither do I.” Dean loses the smirk and turns his attention to Harlow. “But I do know where your evil ex is in the dark fairytale that is your life.”
“You found Albert?” Harlow asks.
“Did they not teach you to talk and drive at the same time in the Army?” I press.
“Damn, you were a less demanding friend when we’d run into each other at The Combover.” Dean turns forward and puts it in drive. “Albert Humphries turned up in Key West. I don’t know if that’s his version of being on the run, but it’s lame. It’s not hard to follow him when he’s flying on Daddy’s private plane. All I had to do was follow the tail numbers. He’s hiding out at his family’s mansion on the beach. Once I knew where he was, I called in a favor to a buddy I served with, King Jennings. He’s DEA down in Miami now. He’s got connections everywhere. It’s not like you can be on the run in the Keys. He’s not the brightest.”
