“I don’t,” Gus answered honestly. “He’s not from around here and I don’t know where he lives.”
“Do you mind if I ask around? See if the neighbors saw anything?”
The question was nothing more than a formality. The officer was going to ask anyone anything he wanted whether Gus and Bex minded or not. “Go right ahead.”
Officer Carnes tipped his cap and walked across the yard. Gus didn’t care who the man talked with. No one was going to give him any information that would implicate the Mayor. It was a private matter to be handled among them. They didn’t need law enforcement involved.
“Don’t worry about him,” Martin said.
“He knew you hadn’t been here. He knew Beck had been in the house. He’d taken all our statements.”
“He’s just doing his job,” Blake offered by way of making it seem okay when none of it was even close to okay.
“I know.”
Martin clapped Gus on the shoulder. “You go check on Bex.”
Gus nodded. “Has Luke shown up?”
“No.”
Damn wolf. Where the hell was he?
