“You’re both being crazy,” I said dismissively. “He’s no different than he was a week ago.”
Lexi sent me a disbelieving look, which made Honey burst out laughing. Her sudden gasp drew our attention as she placed her hand on her stomach and doubled over.
“Honey!” Lexi exclaimed, rushing over to her. “Honey, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” Honey replied, her teeth clenched tightly. “It’s fine. I just need a second.”
Lexi rubbed Honey’s back while I headed to the mini fridge in the corner, grabbing a cold bottle of water. I cracked the top and passed it to her, returning her smile when she took it and drank deeply.
After a moment, she straightened, and I watched as the tension leaked out of her body. “See?” she said brightly, giving a fake smile with eyes full of pain. “Right as rain.”
“Honey, what just happened?”
“It’s not a big deal,” she said. “I just get these cramps sometimes. They don’t last very long, but, boy, are they intense.”
“Have you seen your doctor about them?” Recurring pain like that couldn’t be good.
“Oh, no. It’s not important.”
“Honey,” I said, taking her hand. “It’s very important. How often does this happen?”
“Um,” she sighed, running her other hand through her icy blonde hair. “Once a month, for a couple of days. But seriously, you guys. It’s not a big deal.”
“Well then, you should definitely see a doctor.”
Honey laughed lightly. “Uh, yeah. That’s not an option.”
I frowned. “Why not.”
Lexi looked at me like I was dumb. “Because doctors cost money, and money is tight.”
And suddenly, Ifeltdumb. Of course, doctors cost money; I knew that. I had just never been in a position to have to choose between my health and my rent.
That was some serious bullshit.
“Well, then,” I said, smiling at Honey. “Let me take you. I’ll—”
“No,” Honey cut me off, a look of panic on her face. “I mean, no, thank you, Mrs. Argenti.” She smiled, but I could see she was still mildly freaking out about my offer. I just didn’t understand why. “I appreciate that, but, I’ll be fine. Honest.”
“Okay,” I said slowly. “Well, the offer stands. Please let me know if I can help in any way.”
“You got it.” Honey placed her hand on the door, yanking it open and looking ready to bolt. “Thanks again.”
And with that, she was gone.
“I’ll keep an eye on her,” Lexi said quietly, and I nodded. We would both be watching out for Honey.
“Son of a bitch!” Enzo’s shout echoed around the board room, and Lexi rolled her eyes.
“What now?” she sighed. “Seriously, is it a full moon? Shit is just fuckin’ weird right now.”
I shot her a questioning look, but before she could elaborate, the inner door swung open and Enzo stalked into the room, once again glowering at his phone like it had personally offended him.
“Something wrong, husband?” I teased, attempting to lighten the mood.
“I forgot about this bullshit event tomorrow night,” he ground out, running his free hand through his hair. “Seriously. Who throws a party on a Tuesday?”
“A party?”
