“I heard a cat. Oh, shit.” Unbuckling my seatbelt, I carefully climbed over the center console and into the back of the RV. One peek under the couch was all I needed. Two shiny gold eyes stared back at me. Custard was obviously disgruntled that his house was moving. “Uh, Dane? We might have a stowaway.”
“What?” He twisted around in his seat to try and get a look.
“Don’t wreck us!” I yelped when the RV swerved. “Jesus Christ.”
“Shit! Shit, sorry. Please tell me we didn’t accidentally abduct Custard.”
“Uh.” I laughed when Custard grumbled. “We totally abducted Custard. We can’t turn around now. I don’t wanna miss the concert.” I grabbed a couple of cans of soda out of the mini-fridge and clambered back into my seat. I handed Dane a root beer. “Guess he’s now our official co-pilot?”
He shook his head. “What an adventure, and it hasn’t even truly begun.”
I texted Abby:Custard is with us. Was hiding in the RV.
WATTTT???!!!
Yep. Didn’t want you to worry about him. He’s safe with us. Guess he wanted to go on a roadtrip lol. Dumb cat.
Wow thats crazy boy. Im glad hes safe w u.
Me too.
By the time we made it to the RV park, Dane looked utterly exhausted. He’d driven the whole way, even though I’d offered to switch him spots a couple of hours in. We made sure the water and electricity were hooked up, then made dinner out of a couple of ham and cheese Hot Pockets and half a bag of Cheetos while playing games.
That night, Custard joined us on the bed. He stretched out at our feet, purring away, like he was perfectly content with his new house-on-wheels. I fell asleep smiling.
Gran wouldn’t have it any other way.
