JR
“It’s too tight. I can’t breathe.”
I struggle to loosen my tie. Is it hot in here? Because I’m really starting to sweat. I wipe a fancy cloth handkerchief across my forehead, then stuff it into my suit pocket. “I don’t see why I have to deliver the presentation. It was our combined research. You do it.”
Fletcher straightens my tie, slipping a finger under my shirt to caress the leather collar hidden beneath it. “You were the one to discover the epigenetic biomarker, Dr. Bennett. Your work will lead the way in early stage breast cancer screening, saving countless lives. Of course you should give the talk.”
A lot has changed over the past seven years. My name is now Dr. George Bennett Jr., though everyone still calls me JR. And I’m asked to give presentations at scientific conferences... not my favorite part of being a research geneticist for Spartacus University. But I love the work I’m doing, almost as much as I love Fletcher and our baby girl, Rosalind St. Bernard.
That’s something that hasn’t changed over the years, unless you count how much my love for Fletcher has grown. Every moment I’d spent earning my master’s and doctorate degrees in human genetics, I could count on him for encouragement and support. I still get occasional bouts of anxiety, like when I have to speak in front of a large audience— ugh —but with Fletcher by my side, I know I can handle anything that life throws my way.
“Is my dad here yet?” I ask as I shuffle my notes.
“Yes, baby. He and Molly are in the front row.” The professor points into the waiting crowd from our spot backstage. “Josh said he’d tune into the livestream from Chile.”
“There’s a livestream?” I sway on my feet as a wave of dizziness hits me. Oh god, there’s that ringing sound in my ears again. That can’t be good.
The professor makes a ‘come here’ gesture with his finger, then gives me a soft kiss on the lips. “You’ll be wonderful, Ben. I’ll be right beside you. I’m proud of you, baby boy.”
My Daddy’s right—I can do this. With Fletcher backing me, I can face any challenge.
With the man I love by my side, there’s nothing I can’t tackle.
