Chapter Twenty-Five

One month later…

There was a field of press waiting for Emmy to leave the hospital, and she felt a wave of nerves flood her. Moxie and Issa had drilled her on the questions she would face, and Emmy realized this was her life now. She glanced up at Orin with panic in her eyes, but he smiled at her and took her hand.

“Don’t worry, baby,” he said in a low voice. “This will be easy.”

She appreciated the lie but knew this was only the first challenge. The hospital insisted that she leave in a wheelchair as per hospital policy, and Orin told them in no uncertain terms that he would be the one pushing the wheelchair.

To his astonishment, and to Emmy’s, Moxie had been supportive. “Good, that’s good. If we’re really going to do this, then we need to make sure we’re all in. And the visuals will be good, too.” She looked apologetically at Emmy. “Sorry, Em, but from now on, that will always be a consideration.”

“I know.” But her stomach still roiled with nerves.

She had already been freaked out by the fact that Lucas was no longer her boss but her protector. They’d both been sad the day she had officially quit her job at the agency.

“But, Lucas, you can bet I’ll use my position to champion the agency.”

Lucas had smiled at her. “I know you will, Em.”

“I’m so sorry for embarrassing you, for letting you down.”

He gaped at her. “You did no such thing, Emerson Sati. You saved the life of the President of the United States. Your investigative work helped bring a traitor to justice. You are a credit to the Service.”

“Except the whole sleeping with the president thing.” But she smiled at his words. “Thank you, Lucas. For everything. For how you treated me after Zach, for mentoring me.”

Now, as Orin pushed her wheelchair out of the doors of the hospital, Emmy took a deep breath in. Orin bent down and kissed her cheek. “I love you,” he murmured, “more than anything.

Emmy smiled up at him, told him she loved him, and then turned to face her future…
