Chapter 20
A Hopeful Future
The twilight sky over Xeno Prime was a breathtaking canvas of color, shifting from deep burgundy to warm shades of pink and gold. I stood on the balcony, feeling the cool evening breeze brush against my skin, carrying with it the fragrance of night blossoms. The distant murmur of flowing water reached me, creating a calm rhythm that seemed to echo my own steady heartbeat. I glanced out over the palace gardens, bathed in the soft glow of the twin moons, and felt a profound sense of peace.
Beside me were Kas, Ryler, and Bayn, each of them a presence I’d come to rely on, a part of the life and the purpose I had found here. We stood together in silence, the quiet somehow more powerful than words, united in the shared understanding of everything we’d overcome—and everything still ahead.
Kas broke the silence, his voice thoughtful yet hopeful. “We’ve accomplished so much together, and there’s still so much more to do. I have no doubt that our bond will only deepen our strength to lead and protect Xeno Prime.”
I turned toward him, catching the gentle conviction in his expression. His belief in us was unwavering, and it steadied me.
Ryler’s smile, usually so bright, now held a softness that spoke of genuine emotion. “I couldn’t agree more. Our commitment—to each other and to Xeno Prime—gives me strength every day. I’m excited to see what lies ahead for us.”
Bayn, ever composed, added his voice, his scholarly tone softened by a rare vulnerability. “Our unity shows the power of understanding and diversity. Together, I believe we can face any challenge that comes our way and continue to build a future of peace and prosperity.”
I looked at each of them, my heart swelling with gratitude. “I couldn’t have asked for better partners. Together, we can make Xeno Prime a beacon of harmony and hope.”
Kas reached out, his hand warm and reassuring as it rested on my shoulder. “We’re in this together, Maisie. Our love and unity will guide us, no matter what the future holds.”
Ryler placed his hand over Kas’s, his touch a promise of solidarity. “Together, we’re unstoppable. To our future, and all the possibilities it holds.”
Bayn joined, his voice filled with personal conviction. “To unity, to love, and to the prosperity of Xeno Prime. May our bond continue to inspire and strengthen our kingdom.”
We stood there as the night deepened, a silent promise shared between us under the soft light of the twin moons. The world felt quiet, but the peace we shared was vibrant—a promise of hope, of shared dreams, and of a future we would build together.
In that moment, our commitment to each other and to Xeno Prime felt unbreakable, each connection—a hand on my shoulder, a warm touch—reinforcing the unity we’d worked so hard to achieve. As we looked out over the serene landscape, I knew that together, we could face anything. The love, trust, and understanding we had forged would be our strength, our guide, and the foundation of a thriving kingdom filled with endless promise.

Chapter 1
Shai
“In accordance with the laws of the Krackonian district, we find you, Shailuxian Xan of the Depth Dwellers, within the Darkpool Sector, have violated the law. You were to have taken a mate by the time you reached your first revolution on this moon. Now, at nearly thirty Earth years, you have failed to be compliant. We have two options for the egregious disrespect of our ancient ways.”
A stern finger points down at me inside the holding chamber, which is set central to all of the elders on the council. I can feel their disdain through all of the tension that is filling the room with every achingly long minute I am inside this capsule.
The containment capsule hovers inches above the cold stone floor, and I can feel the icy chill permeating the thin membrane that holds me captive.
The room is large and opulent because why would the elders have it any other way? Each one of the elders sits on a throne of sorts while remaining smug and passing judgments. And each one prim and proper dresses to the nines, extremely flashy and gaudily encrusted with jewelry.
I find myself wincing, knowing that I should have just settled and chosen someone, anyone. I just couldn’t do it, though. There was no use in taking a mate I had no connection to. No use at all for it, really. Why would I take a mate that I couldn’t actually procreate with? If I have no use of my ninth tentacle, then there is no hope for the relationship. No hope of making young, and eventually, I would be found out anyway.
We were told when we were young that we would know when we had an opportunity to mate. A vague statement at best. Growing older just made it worse, though. Friends would brag of their first time awakening the Kraken—of course, they meant their Ovipositors, that ninth tentacle only male Kraken have. I had to sit back and hear all about it from every one of my friends and their stories of the best sex ever.
While I had my fun, I never once felt anything more than just sex with those women.
“I do not deny the accusations.”
I hold my head high and speak clearly, hoping for what I am not certain. But I will not break under their scrutiny. I made the choice, and I will be responsible for it.
“We have already organized for you to be banished to Earth, where you will remain until you no longer breathe. You shall never return to our Moon outside of Saturn's Rings.”
The largest of the Elders leans forward and slightly over the edge of their podium. “Unless you prefer to simply be put to death here and now.”
A slight low chuckle echoes through the cavernous room. “I always do love a good beheading, though it happens so infrequently now.”
I watch as he leans back and settles in his seat once more, brushing the imaginary stardust particles from his sleeve, popping the cuff, and straightening the overly starched and pressed material.
“I will accept the banishment to the planet Earth,” I speak clearly so there is no mistaking which choice I will take.
I don’t want to die, but more, I just don’t want to die a little every day in a meaningless relationship. One, I will have to lie every day to everyone I know and love just to get by.
A gasp can be heard from the gallery, where my close friends and family have gathered to see me off, more like just to get closure for themselves. I find myself turning my head to look in their direction regardless. The feel of a punch hits directly to my stomach, and a lump forms in my throat.
The looks on their faces, a mix of sadness for some and indifference for others, gives me pause. I give my mother a small nod, a final farewell to the only woman I have ever loved. As it stands, possibly the only one that I will ever give a place in my heart.
I will live out my years in this new land, sent there to die alone. There is no way that a Krakonian would find a true mate in a place filled with simple humans. I hang my head in shame over the realization as it sets in deep inside my being.
Alone. Truly Alone.
“You will be taken directly to IRMA - The Interstellar Relocation and Mating Agency on Earth. We have an agreement with them, so you are not just set loose on a foreign land to wreak havoc. You will comply with all directives given by this agency and its associates.”
I nod in agreement as if I have any choice in the matter.
“Any and all personal effects have been collected by our staff and are stowed neatly inside your transport chamber. You will remain in stasis until such time that IRMA can check you into their system and begin their program. Your approximate transport time is just under one Earth year as our shipment barge cannot jump to hyperspace without being noticed and thus would breach our accord.”
The loud hammering echo of the stone slab being pummeled with the golden gavel pounds through my being with such finality that I feel a chill roll through my body, leaving my skin pebbled. My spine tingles with the aftershocks of the shiver. Like a noose has been placed around my neck. I feel doomed.
My tentacles escape for a flash, with the shock of the sudden movement of the capsule as I am hover-shuttled across the expanse of the cathedral-like room. They disappear as fast as they expose themselves. Knowing that I am to stay in my full humanoid form, I force the feeling of fear, worry, and regret—to bury themselves deep within.
Sobbing can be heard over the shuffling of feet, but the capsule is tinted on the side that now faces the gallery audience, and I can only assume it’s mother. Seeing her only child taken and banished to a planet she will never travel to has to be gut-wrenching for her. I feel the pain of it myself, yet there is nothing I can do to ease it.
“I’m sorry, mother.” A whisper leaves my lips, and only I can hear.

As a joke to her fellow Beta colleagues, she created a spoofed blurb and cover for a story and the feedback was so positive that it sparked her to run with it.
That stoked a fire that has her racing down a multi-genre freeway with no off-ramp in sight. K. doesn’t write to “market,” and she is fairly certain that her humor and use of puns may cause an eye roll or two, but as she likes to say, “That’s how I roll.” and “Jokes are always welcome!”
She has traveled the USA extensively, including Alaska, and lived in thirty-eight of the fifty states. Home is now the beautiful state of Wisconsin, where she dreams up her stories in the company menagerie of furbabies, including five puppies, five rescue kitties, twenty something chickens ruled by a rooster named Chicken Parm, six turkeys, six ducks, and a ninety-gallon tropical fish tank.
Life will always be interesting for K. Rose, which will fuel her works and keep her muses singing, come join the chorus.
