All those little moments came together now as Mia walked down the aisle toward the man she loved. He was her future. Mia was almost at the end of the aisle when Lucy, who’d been the flower girl and who was now sitting with Mia’s mom, broke free and tottered up to Mia, arms raised.

“Up, Mama!” she demanded. Laughter rang out, and Mia scooped her daughter into her arms, kissing her on the head.

“Hey, sweet girl.”

Mia’s dad took Lucy from her, smiling at his granddaughter, and Mia walked the last few steps to join her soon-to-be husband at the altar.

“So, this is it,” Evan said, smiling down at her with so much love that Mia felt like her heart might burst.

“This is it.”

“I love you so much, Mia.”

“I love you, too.”

“Shall we begin?” the officiant asked. Mia knew he was asking about the ceremony, but some part of her felt like he was asking if she was ready to begin the rest of her life. As a teacher. A daughter. A friend. A mother. And now, a wife.

“I’m ready,” Mia said. She meant it more than anything. She was ready for this beautiful, wild, unexpected life of hers, as long as her husband and her daughter were by her side. And as long as she didn’t have to attend any wine tastings.
