“I have another meeting. I thought I would leave you two to talk since you will be spending so much time together. One week until you sail,” Addie said with a wink before she departed.
Sebastian turned back to Diana, who glared at him as if he were the devil incarnate. He leaned back and stretched out. Her eyes moved down him. Realizing what she was doing, Diana snapped her gaze back to his face. She frowned.
“Are you really going?” he asked.
She bristled and pursed her lips. “What makes you think I’m considering changing my mind?”
He shrugged one of his broad shoulders. “I’m not sure if you are. If I believed Lady Wesley’s words, it would be the perfect situation for you to spend more time with me without having to worry about what others think.”
A pink hue touched Diana’s cheeks, and she sputtered, speechless. Finally, she bit out, “You are so full of yourself. Do you think I would leave my child simply for an opportunity in your bed? You must think you are something magnificent.”
Sebastian stood and made his way to where she was sitting.
She glared up at him. “Still, it is tempting, isn’t it?
There is a connection between us. A quick tumble would probably cure it.
Do you like playing the part of the moral paragon?
I can’t figure it out. Every time someone brings it up, it seems to bother you.
Do you wish you were more like Lilah? Are you hoping to take a secret lover who will never meet society’s standards of what is acceptable? Is that your interest in me?”
Her eyes flashed with fury. “You are misinformed about my association with Lady Wesley and drastically incorrect about your appeal.”
He barely registered the first part of her statement, more fixated on the last bit. Did she believe that he couldn’t tell she desired him? Unable to stop himself, Sebastian leaned down and did something that shocked them both. He nuzzled her neck again, like he had in the alcove.
She smelled like fresh flowers. With his face pressed against her neck, he cupped the back of her head with one of his hands, itching to pull her hair free. He placed his lips along her jaw, kissing the curves of her face.
Diana huffed. “You do not affect me.”
He chuckled darkly. “Are you sure?”
A breathy gasp escaped her as his mouth trailed down her neck. He ran his lips back up and then pulled away, so they were only inches apart. This lady wanted him. Common sense told him to release her. Still, the temptation to see how wicked Diana could be thrummed through him.
His grip on the back of her head tightened. Would one kiss matter? His cock urged him on, but his common sense gave him pause. And then the decision was out of his hands because Diana shocked him and pressed her mouth to his. The heat of her lips on his caused him to growl.
Yes , his body roared! Sebastian teased Diana’s mouth open and demanded more. He dominated her with his tongue. Breathy moans escaped her. He pulled her up, pressing her flush along his body. She gasped as his hard cock ground against her.
Finally, his mind caught up, reminding him that this lady thought no different of him than Lilah.
Still, her body very much wanted him. Unable to not point out the hypocrisy of her actions, he smirked.
“We can be honest with each other, Diana. You are not the first lady of the ton , playing proper, to want a tryst with a lowly commoner. I’m happy to accommodate. Just admit it.”
She jerked back, and her eyes narrowed.
He continued with his vicious words. “What a shame it must have been to be wedded to Hensley. Don’t get me wrong I liked him, but he was an awkward gent, always focused on numbers and investments. Is that why you are looking for fun now?”
She slapped his cheek. “How dare you!”
Diana walked away from him. Ignoring the sting from the slap, he smirked, certain she was embarrassed that he called her out on her hypocrisy.
Eventually, she turned back to him. He expected rage, but he was shocked to see tears streaming down her cheeks and her eyes filled with despair. He frowned, unsettled.
“You are a fool and a cruel one. Judge me all you want, but my husband was nothing short of wonderful.”
She frantically wiped tears from her face with her hands, taking deep breaths.
Her despair became mingled with anger. “I don’t know why you are so awful to me, but I suspect it has something to do with Lady Wesley.
Everything she said to you at the exhibit was a lie.
I have never once spoken about you to her. ”
The lady stalked back towards him until they were inches apart and glared up at him.
“And not once have I ever thought of you while my husband lived. How dare you insinuate I would want you when I had him. You’ve done it twice.
Not everyone is so enamored with your attractiveness.
Honestly, it’s a waste that you are so handsome when who you are inside leaves a lot to be desired. ”
Guilt crept through him that he’d made a terrible mistake. He’d taken Lilah’s insinuations as truth, never doubting them. Had he been wrong? “Diana—”
“No! I don’t care what you have to say.”
Sebastian flushed. She spun on her heels and marched right out the door.
He cursed silently but before he knew it, she was back standing in the doorway.
Her eyes emanated with fury. “And don’t presume that I will not be on the SS Lark .
It will take more than a kiss from you to scare me off from going on this trip for the club. ”
He said nothing until he was sure she was gone, and then yelled, “Fuck!”
What had Sebastian done? He’d behaved atrociously. He ran a hand over his face.
