“If anything changes or she vomits or anything else on that list, bring her back.”

“I’ll be fine, doctor.”

“I’ll make sure she follows your orders. I promise I’ll take good care of her.” The doctor gave him one more look and then left the room. “Now I have to figure out how to get you home.”

“I can’t believe this happened.”

“I’m so sorry, Angel. I wish it was me in that bed instead of you. If only I could have stopped it another way.”

“I’m fine. In a couple of days you won’t even be able to tell so stop it. You’re not Superman, although you sure did a good impersonation last night. But you figured out the best solution to an impossible situation.”

“I don’t know. It sure as hell seems like I’m doing a piss poor job of protecting you.”

“Don’t be so hard on yourself. I don’t know how you could have expected this,” Chase said from the opening in the curtain. “I told the nurse I was your brother-in-law, so they let me in.”

“Perfect timing. I was trying to figure out how to get her home.”

“Faith and Lily are bringing over some food and meeting us at your place. There was no stopping them when they found out.”

“They don’t need to, especially Lily, she’s due any day now.” Jasper rolled his eyes. This was the second time she was in the middle of a clusterfuck, and all she ever did was worry about others.

“Don’t worry about it. Alex will make sure she’s fine. Oh, and I got the cake to the Evanston wedding. They were thrilled with it but are worried about you. You’ll probably have all the little old ladies lining up as soon as you open the bakery again.”

“I worked so damn hard on that cake. I can’t believe it’s ruined. Wait, what do you mean again? The bakery will be open tomorrow just like always.”

“Why don’t you wait and see how you feel in the morning before you decide.”

“It was still beautiful. You should have heard all the oohs and ahhs when I carried it in.”

“But…”

“No buts. C’mon, Angel. Let’s get you home.”
