Page 123 of A Rancher's Vow
“What?” Dustin demanded.
She turned to face him. “He said I’d be a perfect addition to the Silver Stone family. I remember the wording because it sounded oddly old-fashioned but made sense. Because of course working at the ranch is like being a part of a family.”
Dustin’s heart pounded.
The entire time it had been Caleb.
So many emotions, so many memories. Caleb had always been there for the family, every step of the way. Even now, Dustin was still being guided by his brother.
Across the yard from where Dustin and Charity stood, Caleb leaned on the railing next to Tamara, his hand resting on her hip. The two of them comfortable yet connected as always. That’s what Dustin hoped to look like years from now with Charity.
Caleb’s gaze met his, and suddenly Dustin knew exactly what came next.
He caught Charity’s hand, turning her to face him. “You have the ring in your pocket?”
Charity nodded, reaching in to pull it out. She opened her hand to show it lying in her palm. “Need something?”
“For you to put it on. The party can handle a little more celebrating at this point.” He slipped the pale blue stone back where it belonged, kissed her knuckles, and stared into her eyes. “I love you, Tee. Thanks for agreeing to be mine. I promise you’ll never regret saying yes.”
He didn’t need to do anything else. His family had already spotted the ring.
Cheers and handshaking and back-patting and laughter ensued. The children raced in circles with Patchwork Annie barking excitedly. All the ladies had to see the ring. All his brothers had to pat him enthusiastically on the back.
After offering a firm embrace, Caleb stepped back and dipped his chin at Dustin in approval. He pulled Charity in for a hug.
“Welcome to the family,” he said when he let her go.
She had tears in her eyes as she took Dustin’s hand again, leaning into him as she took in the happy chaos around them.
That night as they lay in bed and made plans, Dustin promised himself that he’d never forget what this felt like. Being in love. Being cared for. Caring for and loving Charity.
She cupped his cheek in her hand and smiled into his eyes. “I love you.”
“Forever,” Dustin vowed with all his heart.
