He glances at the steak knives still tucked under my holster. “Although you seem to have some excellent alternatives.”

I let out a low huff at the hint of amusement in his voice, reaching my hands out for the velvet wrap.

My knives almost feel too big in my hands as I stare down at them. Slowly, I unwrap them, run my finger over the handles. The initials that Luc had engraved stare back at me.

I force a smile as I wrap them up. “Look after them for me. I don’t want them to get lost in this chaos.”

He scans my face. And his expression… his eyes flicker with anger. Anger and sadness, as he brushes his finger across my cheek. “Of course. For as long as you need.”

I force a breath.

This is not over. There is still Matteo to consider, the structure of the Cosa Nostra shaken to its core. He cannot be allowed to live.
