“For you, anything.”

Fiona came rushing in, nearly falling over her own feet.

“There are people here! A man named Elric, a wolf, a woman, and more.”

“Elric’s back?” Brenna said, getting up from her seat.

“That’s what people out there are saying.”

Brenna looked down at Cole. “I guess I should introduce you to the man I once thought I would marry.”

BRENNA

Hair the color of fire.

Brenna looked on as Elric greeted his kin, introducing them to the six Heartlanders he brought with him.

“I suppose he’s okay looking,” Cole said, frowning. “A bit too gleeful for my liking.”

Brenna could see underneath Elric’s smiles, to the sadness that laced her one time lover’s eyes. His pain was enormous, and she took it in because it was all that she could do to lessen his burden.

Tamia was lost to them. She’d known that would be the inevitable outcome, but it didn’t make the moment less painful.

Of course, Elric wore a brave face as he was ever selfless.

Dayla and Icaries greeted each other, running off to play and catch up.

“Ah, Brenna!” Elric enthused as he pulled the lovely redhead over. “I’d like to introduce you to Anya, my intended.”

The girl smiled, spreading freckles across her face.

“It’s good to meet you. My home is yours.” Brenna said, charmed by the vibrant Heartlander girl.

Anya looked at the expanse of the caves built into the mountain. “It’s different than I thought it would be.”

“Did you think we’d be sleeping in piles of hay?” Brenna said. “Because there’s a town up north I could send you to if we’ve failed to meet your expectations.”

“No—I didn’t mean to insult you!”

“And you didn’t,” Elric cut in. “Brenna’s dry wit is something she’s ever prideful of.”

“Eh-hem!” Cole cleared his throat loudly.

“And who is this…” Elric’s eyes roved over Cole, “rather robust fellow.”

“His name is Cole, and he is my manservant.”

Cole jerked his head to look at Brenna, appalled. “Man servant?”

Brenna shrugged. “He’s working his way up.”

Elric’s chuckles turned to a gasp as he caught sight of Eddard approaching.

“Pay no mind to the Ossorian. In fact, you’ll encounter a few more.”

Elric frowned. “Care to bring me up to speed, or should I seek out Orrick?”
