Story: Wild Ride
“I happened to be in the hospital and figured I’d drop in to see what you were up to.”
She smiled. “Why are you here?”
“A victim was brought in. Tammy Traynor—goes by her boyfriend’s name, Garrison. She lives in Sunburst Acres with a guy named Tibor. You know anything about him?”
“Tibor Garrison. Nope. Nothing. Sorry.”
“No problem. I’ll get him. Billy is coming to keep watch on her.”
“I heard you had a date last night.” Savanna giggled.
“You got eyes and ears at the roadhouse? Let me guess. Jack called and told you. He’s a bigger gossip than the ladies at the bank.”
“Don’t make me laugh. It hurts my stitches.”
“I’ve got your guys in my lockup. The arraignment is tomorrow. See how that goes.”
“I’m relieved you got them.”
I laughed. “Turns out I had to shoot both of them in the leg to make them listen.”
Savanna smiled. “Somehow that cheers me up.”
I sat next to Savanna’s bed and looked Tibor Garrison up on my phone. He had a sheet. Two previous domestic assaults, but the victim wasn’t Tammy. Another woman with an address in the same trailer park. Kathleen Winston. I put a BOLO out on Garrison’s Escalade and a want on him.
“This guy I’m looking for drives an Escalade but he doesn’t have a job.”
“And he lives up there in the trailer park?” asked Savanna. “He might be a guy you want to take a close look at.”
“I think so too. You know a Kathleen Winston?”
“Umm… I don’t think so.”
“Must be the previous girl he used for a punching bag.”
“Did he do any time?” asked Savanna.
“Thirty days.”
“Hardly enough.”
“I’ve got to go. I’m meeting Billy in the lobby.” I leaned down and gave her a hug. “You’ll be out of here soon.”
As I was about to leave the room, Savanna grabbed my arm. I turned to face her. Her eyes were filled with fear.
“Travis, be careful. Something tells me this Tibor guy is dangerous.”
I gave her a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry, Savanna. I can handle myself.”
“You sure can, but there’s always somebody tougher and meaner out there.”
As I made my way to the hospital lobby, I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that had settled in my stomach. Maybe it was just hunger because I hadn’t eaten lunch, but I thought it was more than that.
I had dealt with plenty of dangerous criminals in the past, but there was something about this Tibor Garrison that was pissing me off.
When Billy walked into the hospital, I waved him over and he sat down next to me. I went over everything we had so far for Tammy Traynor Garrison.
“You think this Tibor is a drug guy?”
