Story: Together at Ruby's

Chad cleared his throat. “I’m glad you picked up,” he said. “Some things have come to light at the firm, and I wanted to tell you that the role of Vice President of Mergers and Acquisitions has opened up. I’d like to offer it to you.”

Shocked, Tate didn’t know quite how to answer. A part of her had longed for exactly that type of call. Even though she loved buying the gym and working to make it better than ever, it was still scary. When she worked at the firm, she had a steady and reliable income, something that wasn’t going to be the case with a small business. Yet now that it was happening, all she wanted to do was laugh at Chad’s offer.

Tate smiled widely. “Not on your life,” she answered. “I’ve decided to go a different direction with my career. One where I am appreciated and makes me feel validated.”

“Tate, you were always—” Chad started, but Tate had heard enough.

“Don’t bother, Chad,” she said. “I’ve made up my mind. I heard from HR, and I know my claims were validated. Just count your blessings that I haven’t decided to sue the firm, or maybe even you and Aurora.”

“Now, wait a minute—” Chad started again.

With a shake of her head, Tate realized she truly was done with that chapter of her life. “I need to go, but good luck with the firm.” She hung up without waiting for a response because she had better things to do.

The door to the gym opened, and a beaming Liza walked in with Allie and Rey. “The new sign looks so good out there,” she said, glancing around the room. “And so does all of this.” She crossed to Tate and kissed her. “You’ve done so much, and worked so hard, and it shows. I couldn’t be prouder of you.”

Taking Liza’s hand, Tate looked at her friends who had gathered around her as Vivian handed out mocktails. The doors to the gym for the grand reopening would happen in a few minutes, but she needed a second to absorb it all. Her fiancée, Liza. Her gym with her best friend, Nikki. Plus, Allie and Vivian, Marty and Rey. People she cared about most in the world. “Thank you to each of you,” she said looking from one to the other. “This never would have happened without you.” She held up her glass. “So, I propose a toast.” Everyone lifted their glass. “To the power of our friendship. May we always be together. Cheers!”

“Cheers,” the others said, touching glasses, and as Tate drank the fabulous mocktail, the future never looked brighter.
