Story: The Maverick

“I love you, Orion.” She pulled me down for a kiss.

“I love you, Elena.”

I pressed a button on the side of the chair. It elevated her seatso she could access the telescope easily.

“Fancy chair,” she said. “What galaxy should I look toward today?”

“How about we try to discover one?”

“Really?” Her eyes widened. “Can we do that?”

“We sure can. This telescope can see farther than any other telescope out there.”

“Hear that, my sweet babies?” She glanced down at her belly and rubbed it. “We’re going to discover a new galaxy together.”

Elena

I couldn’t describe how happy I was to look into the universe with my husband and unborn babies. Magic stirred in the air, and my heart thumped with joy.

I swiveled the telescope and zoomed. “Look at that beautiful nebula. It looks like a pregnant woman, doesn’t it?”

Orion laughed as he looked at the screen on the side, reflecting on what I saw. “It does. But you’re more beautiful.”

“Look at those stars and planets! That blue planet has three rings and five moons. Am I seeing this right?”

“Yes,” Orion confirmed.

“Am I still looking at the Andromeda galaxy?” I asked. Orion knew more about astronomy than I did. The vastness of space and possibilities continued to astound me. When I felt overwhelmed, I looked up at the sky, and my issues became minute. There was an infinite field of magic out there that hadn’t been discovered.

“You’re way past Andromeda, Sunshine.”

“Really?” I shifted in my excitement. “So, this is a new galaxy?”

Orion pressed some buttons on the keyboard. “It’s five hundred million light-years away. It’s a spiral-shaped galaxy, similar to the Milky Way.”

“Gosh, there are so many stars.” A thrill rushed through me. “Am I seeing this right? I see two suns.

“There are two suns.”

“Wow.” Hope surged in me. “Has this been discovered?”

“Yes.” He leaned over and kissed me. “You just did.”

“Oh, my god!” I gripped his forearm, squeezing hard. “I don’t know what to name it yet. But I don’t want anyone else to discover and name it before I do.” Concern etched my voice.

He smiled. “Don’t worry. No one will name it before you. Like I said, this is an advanced telescope. You’re able to see things no other scientists can see. This telescope isn’t available for another six months.” He pressed some more buttons on the screen. “I just took a snapshot of what you saw and recorded. I’ll submit it to the International Astronomical Union in France. It’ll be under my company name as a place holder. Once we think of a name, we’ll update the data. How’s that?”

I threw my arms around him. “You are the best!” I gripped his face and kissed him. “Our kids are so blessed. They’ll get to discover incredible things before anyone else.”

“We’ll make sure they’re loved and make this world a better place for everyone.”

With that, my husband linked my hand with his as I browsed the universe in awe and appreciation.
