BERN:The bud lady got in touch. Someone is asking questions about Wyatt.

VAUGHN:[laughter] Well, if they get any answers, maybe they’d like to share them with us.

B:They warned us, him and Emmett both. At the first sign of blowback, they’d walk away.

V:So, no word from Emmett either?

B:None.

V:You think he and Wyatt are somewhere together—you know, safety in numbers?

B:I doubt it. Hard to hit two targets distant from each other with one shot. Not impossible, but hard. Safer to remain apart.

V:Let them. We have our own people. We’re not like the old Mexican or that fucking Bilas.

B:We still don’t know who’s coming, but I may have a lead. It will cost us, but the source rings true.

V:[Pause] Go back to the someone asking questions up north.

B:[UI] —— investigator.

V:Say again?

B:The one who’s asking questions about Wyatt, he’s a private investigator.

V:Could be worse. Could be police.

B:Not in this case. His name is Parker. He has a reputation.

V:What kind of reputation?

B:The kind that’s deserved.
