Story: The Book of Doors
“Where are you sleeping?” Izzy asked.
“I’ll get a room at the motel,” she said. “Or if there are none, I’ll go somewhere else. I have the book.”
They were quiet for a few moments, just the sound of the waves and the crackling of the fire.
“What did you do with the book?” Cassie asked, her eyes on the flames. “The Book of Illusion?”
Izzy looked at Lund.
“We buried it,” he said.
“We didn’t think it was safe to keep it on us,” Izzy said.
“Did you use it again?” Cassie asked Izzy. “Did you work out how to create illusions?”
Izzy shook her head. “Maybe I can only do magic in times of certain death. Remember what Drummond said when we were in Lyon? Some people can learn to use books.”
“Yeah,” Cassie said.
“Maybe I can learn to use the Book of Illusion,” Izzy said. She looked into the fire. “Not sure I want to, though.”
“We need the book,” Cassie said. “If the woman thought you were dead it means the illusions work on her. Maybe we can use an illusion to defeat her.”
“We can go dig it up,” Izzy suggested.
“Is it far?” Cassie asked.
“Yeah,” Lund said. “It’s far.”
“How far?”
“It will take a few days to get there, unless we get a car of our own.”
“We don’t need a car,” Cassie said. “We just need a doorway nearby.”
Lund sipped his beer and shook his head. “No doorways nearby,” he said. “Your book will only get you so far. We thought of that. Just in case someone else got your book.”
He saw her nod, appreciating how careful they had been.
“It’s getting cold,” Izzy said. “And everyone else is leaving. Shall we head in? I don’t like these empty places when there’s nobody else around.”
“City girl at heart,” Cassie murmured.
Lund jumped up and killed the fire by kicking sand over it.
“You coming?” Izzy asked Cassie, as Lund pulled her up.
“I’ll be a while,” she said. “Need to do some thinking.”
Izzy hesitated.
“I’m not going to disappear again,” Cassie said. “I promise.”
“You better not,” Izzy muttered. She nodded her head at Lund and led him away up the sand.
Lund looked back once and saw Cassie sitting there by herself, staring out at the dark sky and the ocean beneath it.
