Story: Something Just Like This
"Yeah, I don't know, he was funny and smart and everything. But the more he told stories about people from work, they just started to sound really mean-spirited, you know? I mean, he was bitching about having to cover for one of his colleagues whose mother died. Said she was dying for years so it wasn't like they weren't ready for it."
"That does sound a little dickish," Colleen agreed. And she knew that kind of attitude wouldn't fly with Sarah, who was one of the most kind-hearted and compassionate people Colleen knew. Often to a fault.
"And it wasn't just that," Sarah continued. "There were some other... bedroom issues as well."
"What?" Colleen sat up straighter. "Did you finally get busy? I can't believe you didn't tell me!" It had been over two years since Sarah had separated from her husband, and as far as Colleen knew, since then Sarah had done little more than make out with a few guys.
"Let's just say it was nothing to write home about."
"Did he come too quickly? Or worse, he couldn't get it up at all?"
Sarah let out a heavy sigh. "Oh, he got it up. It's just, even when it was up, there wasn't much to work with. Like, we're talking cocktail weenie."
Colleen winced even as she let out a startled laugh. "You dumped him because he has a small dick?"
"Not just because of that—like I said, he was starting to seem like kind of a jerk. But I admit, if the sex had been even decent, I might have let him hang around for a little longer. But I just couldn't face doing it again with him. Seriously, Colleen, I could stuff a roll of mints in my underwear and be packing a bigger load."
Colleen laughed until tears streamed down her face. God she loved talking to this woman.
"I'm glad my misfortune brings you such pleasure," Sarah said drily.
"I'm sorry," Colleen said and composed herself. "So, what did you say when you ended it? 'Sorry but I've got tampons in my bathroom that put you to shame?'"
"That's the worst of it. I didn't say anything. I just never responded to any of his texts and didn't return his calls."
"You ghosted him for having a small penis?"
"I know," Sarah said, her tone mournful. Colleen could imagine her, rocking back and forth, one slim hand pressed guiltily to her forehead. "I'm a terrible person, right?"
Colleen shrugged. "Isn't ghosting part of the modern dating landscape? Consider it a rite of passage."
"I should send him a text—something. Just tell him I don't think it's going to work out."
"And then immediately block him everywhere," they said in unison.
Sarah laughed. "And let me guess? JT is as hung as the horse he rides?"
"Not to rub it in, but let's say he's... more than adequate."
"Ugh, I need to get out of LA."
"You should come visit the ranch. Aidan would love it!"
"That's not a terrible idea. Although I don't know that I'll have much luck landing myself a hot cowboy with an eight-year-old in tow."
Colleen was distracted from thoughts of her friend when her own hot cowboy strolled into the restaurant. JT's eyes instantly met hers, a smile pulling at his full lips.
She forced herself to look past JT's shoulder and meet Liam's gaze. She gave him a quick wave and made herself very busy helping other customers as they slid onto two stools at the bar.
After a few minutes she moved down the bar to wait on them, hoping no one else felt the electric crackle in the air as she locked eyes with JT.
"Took you long enough, sis," Liam said. "I was just asking JT who you gotta blow around here to get a drink."
JT gave a choked laugh and tucked his chin, but it wasn't enough to hide the flush creeping across his cheekbones. "I apologize for my friend's manners."
Colleen rolled her eyes. "No worries. After thirty years, I know you can't take him anywhere." She took their orders and quickly slid two pints of beer in front of them. She did her best to play it casual, listening as they bitched about what a pompous ass Cort could be sometimes.
She left them to wait on other customers, but couldn't keep her attention from drifting back to them. Or more to the point, to JT. It was like every time she looked at him, she noticed something new about him. Like tonight, she noticed the faint wave in his hair now that it had grown out a little bit. And how thick and tanned his forearms were, exposed by the rolled-up sleeves of his plaid cotton shirt.
