Story: Shadow Beasts
She stuck a finger under her glasses to wipe her nose. “Stupid glasses are sliding off from the sweat.”
“You should wear contacts.” Dewey glanced at her, catching sight of the dashboard. The speedometer read seventy-one. “Why are you driving so fast?”
“What? I don’t know. I panicked when Night of the Living Dead attacked us for a second time.”
He peeled off his dinosaur costume and dumped it on the floor in front of the seat. “Well, slow down! I didn’t survive a werewolf attack just to die in a car accident.”
“Okay, okay. Stop being a backseat driver.” Paige lifted her foot off the pedal, causing the car to slow down. Paige blew out another sigh of relief. “Wait, what do you mean werewolf attack?”
Dewey struggled to wrangle the seat belt around him and buckle it. He shoved the shoulder strap behind him and picked up the phone again, tapping around.
“Did you see his wrist? The one I bit?”
“No? Good going on that one, by the way.”
Dewey gave her a satisfied nod and a smile. “Thank you. He had a tattoo of a wolf on his wrist. Mark of the werewolf. I couldn’t make out his clan clearly. It all happened so fast.”
Paige blew out a long breath. “I guess they’re serious about getting that mirror.”
“I’d say so,” Dewey said, still fiddling with the phone. “They must have thought we were going after it now.”
“Too bad we’re going to Alaska to the dog park,” Paige said with a sly smile.
Dewey let the phone fall into his lap and shot her a glance. “Yeah, what was that, Paige? You really need to work on your lying game.”
“Oh, sorry, I’m not great at lying on the spot. I happen to think that’s a good thing.”
“Yeah, except when there’s a murderous werewolf driving your rideshare, and he knows right away that you’re lying.”
“I’m pretty sure he knew right away when he picked us up. Duh. It’s not like I gave it away by my bad lie. And anyway, aren’t you supposed to be figuring out which way to go? I’m just driving aimlessly here, and I’d really like to know how to get to the airstrip.”
“Your phone is stupid,” Dewey claimed as he continued to tap around on it.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means it can’t find the airstrip.”
Paige flicked her gaze between the phone and the road. “It can’t find it?” After a moment, she rolled her eyes. “You can’t type airstrip into the search bar. Duh. You have to type Shadow Harbor Air Club.”
Dewey tapped around on the screen, his ears wiggling. “How many airstrips could there be that it couldn’t find it? There. It’s finding a route now. Turn around.”
“What?”
Dewey wiggled a finger in the air. “It’s showing me a U-turn thingy.”
“I can’t hear the directions.”
“I’m telling you the directions, Paige.”
“Well, I’d like to hear the navigation lady tell me the directions, Dewey.”
Dewey widened his eyes as he tapped around on the phone. “Someone’s touchy.”
“Yeah, I’m touchy, okay? I tend to get that way when I’m nearly kidnapped by a werewolf on our way to the airstrip.”
He huffed. “I can’t find the volume.”
“It’s the button on the side.”
