Story: Saving Becky
After a couple more minutes, they saw a person with a hoodie and a ski mask, sweats, and sweatshirt drop down between the cars, then, in no time, they were running out of the camera shot.
“I need to call the police.”
“No, I already called a company we have worked with on several occasions. Sharp Security. They are much closer than our company. They should be here pretty quick.”
The doorbell rang right at that moment. “Becky, there are some security people here to speak to you. What’s going on?”
Becky stopped to throw on her sweats and a long-sleeved tee while her father went down to let them do their thing. She shoved her feet into her sneakers without socks and asked her mom to make coffee.
“I already did, dear. I know how to entertain even if the guests are people I’ve never met before.” Becky ignored themessage her mother was trying to send and headed for the front door.
Nick Sharp was a nice-looking man with the confidence only found in dangerous jobs and orchestrating those jobs. He was similar to Jac in certain ways and then not at all like him. She would have been intimidated by his presence if she hadn’t been working on projects that had brought them on board with some of their teams in the last year. As it was, she just saw him as another hot security guy. He was not as sizzling as her guy, but he had assets.
She reached her hand out. “Nick. I didn’t know they were pulling out the big guns.”
“Rebecca.” He had Jac as a name reference, so she didn’t correct him. “Surprised to see you here and with this issue. Where’s Carter?”
“On a job. This is my parents’ house. I guess you met my father, James Carrington.”
“I did. He told me you heard something last night and pulled up the feed. Smart.”
They both knew that Sharlee had caught the intruder and that she had called them, but if they were going to keep the fact that the information was gotten by not entirely legal means, it had to be this way.
Just then, Becky received a text. Nick grinned. “Carter or Jac?”
“Carter. Excuse me while I get read the riot act and then reassure him. That is if I can reassure him.”
“We’ve taken care of the issue, and your dad and I are discussing the type of security he needs in this upscale neighborhood.”
“Okay, I’ll let Carter know, and you guys keep talking but inside. Mom has coffee cake and coffee if you want it.”
“Come on in, Nick and Jared. Let’s talk security while my daughter does her thing.”
Becky followed and walked to her room to chat with Carter. Her hands shook, realizing someone had tried tampering with her car. She didn’t know exactly what was done, only that they had.
Carter: Baby, are you all right?
Becky: I’m okay. Who would tamper with my car?
Carter: Working on that answer right now. I am finishing this job tonight, but I’ll be home in the morning. Garrett is on his way to pick you up. Nick and Jared will take your car back with them and find out as much as they can from it before bringing it up to us. Your parents’ cars weren’t tampered with.
Becky: I can just wait until they finish to go home. I’m sure Jac will understand.
Carter: Jac won’t understand, and I will paddle your bare bottom raw if you don’t come home now. You can stay with Ivy or Sharlee. We’ll get the car back in a couple of days. I have to go, but you do not leave alone. Wait for Garrett to pick you up, or I will be very angry.
Becky: Fine.
Carter: I know you’re upset but watch the tone.
Becky: I’m going now. There is no tone with one-word texts. See you tomorrow.
Things went fast after that. Candace tried to make the men breakfast, but they declined. And within thirty minutes of Nick Sharp and Jared showing up, Garrett was parking his car on the street. He looked around as though taking in the lay of the land, just like Carter had done when he first came to her parents’ house. These men.
When he strode like he was king of the world up to the front door, another trait all these alpha men seemed to have, Becky’smother hesitated as she stared at the big, secret service-looking man.
“Mrs. Carrington? I’m Garrett Sullivan, and I’ve come to retrieve Rebecca.”
“Garrett?” The minute she heard a familiar voice, Becky knew she had revealed her feelings of being out of her depth and needed someone she trusted to take things over.
