“And my wife?”

“And your wife.” She glanced down at the ring on her hand. “It’s so beautiful. When did you find the time to buy it?”

“I didn’t. It was my mother’s.”

Tears shone in her eyes, and he could see how much that meant to her.

“How did you have it with you? Was it in a lockbox in Amelie?”

“No. I asked Ash to get it out of my safe at my house in Montana.”

“When?”

“The day after I kissed you. He brought it to me when I met him in San Juan.”

“You were that sure of me? I was still furious with you then.”

“I’ve waited a long time to be able to be with you, Eve. That kiss told me exactly what I needed to know.”

“Oh yeah?” She leaned over and kissed him tenderly. “What does that kiss tell you?”

“That you’re mine.”

“I am,” she agreed softly. “I have been for a very long time.”

Hours later, Eve lay in the cot beside Gideon’s bed. Her thoughts were settled, her mind finally at peace. She knew who she was, what she was, and where she was going. And she was with the man she loved. Her life was exactly what she wanted it to be.

In the darkness, Gideon said in his beautiful gravelly voice, “Eve?”

“Yes?”

“We’re going to have a beautiful life together.”

Happiness flooding her soul, she answered softly, fervently, “Yes, we are, my love. Yes, we are.”
