Story: Operation: Discovery

He smiled again and lifted her fingers to his lips, silencing her. “I ordered the DJ.”

Brendon couldn’t have surprised her more if he’d lit the table on fire. “You did? Why?”

He gave a slight nod to the DJ and suddenly his mic blasted over the crowd. “Good evening! You guys sure know how to party, but are you ready for some music and maybe a little dancing?”

There were a few cheers, and the DJ laughed. “We’ll see if we can get you a little more excited than that. First, I’d like the bride and groom to come on over and we’ll have their dance to kick things off.”

Her heart sank deeply, and she gripped his hand tight. How could the DJ be so insensitive? Instead of saying anything about what the DJ asked, Brendon backed away from the table. He couldn’t continue to hold her hand and wheel his chair, but she realized then he wasn’t in his normal chair. This one had handles on the back.

As Connor came up behind him and gripped those handles, waiting to push Brendon onto the floor, Brendon reached for her hand again and held it tightly. She walked alongside him to the dance floor, still unsure of what to do. Edwyn and Junior followed them, hanging back slightly. They reached the dance floor and Connor turned Brendon around, facing the crowd.

“Friends, family, and everyone else. I present to you, the bride and groom, Brendon and Dee Ruse.”

The whole room cheered then, and Brendon leaned over for a kiss. She bent and kissed him, wanting to hold on to that moment for eternity. As he kissed her, she felt him moving around in his seat. She backed away slightly as he handed his cummerbund to Junior.

“What?” She stood straight and took a step back.

Their song started, the one that had put them in the mood to share their first kiss. Connor leaned down to Brendon’s right ear. “Ready?”

Brendon nodded and held his arms wide as Junior and Edwyn gripped him under them, bracing him. They lifted, standing him up as Connor quickly moved the chair, then came in behind him and gripped the transfer belt around his waist that he’d been wearing the whole time.

“Dance with me?” Brendon asked, his voice already shaking along with his legs.

She stepped into his arms and although it was awkward swaying with three men surrounding her husband, he’d done all of this for her. He hated his braces, and his chair was part of who he was, but he’d gone out of his way to make the day hers. “I love you, Brendon Ruse.”

He gripped her tightly, like he was unwilling to let her go just yet even though it had to be draining him to stand. “I love you too, Dee.” He kissed her forehead.

Connor stopped them before Brendon could tell him to, bringing the chair back from the sidelines. As soon as he was back seated, he pulled her into his lap and they continued the dance all on their own, with him in the lead just as she’d always wanted.
