“You arrogant prick! Is this what Dons do? Trick a lady into a one-night stand only to kidnap them for what? Human trafficking? To kill them?”
Abruptly, he comes to a halt. I can see his fist clench as his body visibly stiffens, but I don’t care. I’m a human with rights and feelings.
“I’m a human with rights and feelings. If you can’t get that into your head then fuck you!” I spit the words with venom, wiping my tears.
Slowly, he turns to me. His face is in the same deadpan expression, but his eyes are different. They’re cold and blazing with fury as his strides toward me are curt and calculated. I don’t have the chance to speak again when he does.
“Watch your mouth.” His growl reverberates menacingly across the narrow hallway. It strikes something in my chest. I’m tempted to curl into myself, but I don’t.
“Or what?” I sniff. Now that I finally have his attention, I’m going to make sure I let him know my mind. Every bit of it. I can hear his harsh breath. I can feel it on my forehead as he inches closer.
“For as long as you’ll be here, I suggest you watch your tone when addressing me.” His words are laced with every bit of authority that makes me cower. I try to talk…to say something again, but this time my lips feel jammed under his unnerving stare.
We stay like that for a moment, his eyes darting to every corner of my face before he pulls back and begins walking again.
I swallow, still rooted to my spot. My heart is pacing harshly. For a moment, I thought he’d…. kill me.
When I bring myself back to reality, I resume following him. He just keeps walking until we emerge from… an underground tunnel? I feel the warm sunlight on my face for the first time in days.
The building before me is a mansion, possibly his, which only means he’s not letting me go just yet.
For as long as you’ll be here.
I’m only being taken somewhere else, more fancy, to be held hostage again. I hold back my tears as the reality slowly dawns on me.
Is this it? Is this my life now?
There are guards situated in every corner of the mansion. I spot two far away at the front gates and another two by the large, brown oak door Ezra and I walk through. So even if I try to make a run for it, it’d be a futile attempt.
I don’t bother taking in the richness of the mansion. Or the seemingly expensive paintings that hang on the wall as I follow him, drained and devastated.
We get to a door. There are two guards on either side of the door, but at a distance.
Holding my gaze blankly, he pushes the door open. “Go in.”
Chapter six
Ezra
My eyes shoot open, heavy beads of sweat trickling down my body. I can hear my heart pounding in my ears as the sounds of my heavy gasps fill the room.
Fuck. It's the same dream over and over again.
Bringing a hand to clutch my chest, I lean against the chair to steady my vitals. I can feel my blood pressure rising as usual. The sting in my chest is a harsh bite, which elicits an involuntary groan from me as I quickly scramble the drawers open before finding my pills.
I peel the cap of the container open and scatter two bluish pills on my palm before throwing them into my mouth.
As my eyes dart around, I catch a glimpse of the time from the small clock on the table. 4:06 p.m. I must have fallen asleep while filling out paperwork. Today is one of those days…
A wave of headache slams into me as I get flashbacks of the events of that gory night. I stay still, staring into space, ready for the usual rush of memories that comes before it vanishes. I've always known I don't deserve to be happy, but their lives were a heavy sacrifice I wasn't ready to bear. I could never be ready.
I cherished her… them. I cherished what we had. And in the twinkle of an eye, it was all gone. Gone like they were never here.
Your position is a great one that comes with great sacrifices.I recall the words Father said to me on the night I got sworn in as the don.
He believed in those words and had even died believing in them, along with Mother. Their deaths happened a few months later. They were brutally murdered by a nemesis. It was my first eye-opener that this life…position, indeed came with great sacrifices.
The headache intensifies as a sharp sound strikes my head. At first, it feels like the sound of their cries but as I turn my head vigorously to get rid of it, I see a phone buzzing.
