“Actually, no. She fainted.”

Ellery’s eyes popped open. “Shefainted?”

“Yep. I guess getting caught was a big shock.”

“Were you able to talk to her at all?”

“Not really. She did say it was all a misunderstanding.”

“How so?”

“She’s not planning to kill you or anyone else. She just felt it would do you good to be taken down a peg. Her exact words.”

“Taken down a peg?”

“I guess you’re getting too large for your britches, Mr. Page.”

“What about Lara?”

“Imelda felt Lara should have done the tasteful thing and retired after getting out of prison.”

Ellery absorbed this latest news. “So… Is that it?”

“No.”

Ellery regarded Jack’s for a moment. Jack was staring at the fire. He lowered his gaze. His eyes met Ellery’s.

Watson raised his head, looked from Ellery to Jack, and yawned so widely, his jaw squeaked.

The corner of Jack’s mouth tugged into a faint smile.

“It’ll wait,” Ellery agreed.
