Story: Kingdoms of Shadow and Ash
'What did you buy at the market?' she asked.
'Almost everything I set my eyes on.' Images of the opulence—the likes of which they could only dream of in his lands—flashed before his eyes.
The Black Hoods could get their hands on spices, dried fruits, and nuts—although he'd never seen them laid out like in the markets of Selise—but the exotic fruits, pastries, and delicate vegetables didn't survive the arduous journey to the north. 'Have you tasted bananas? And those spikey fruits … what are they called?'
'Pineapples?' she said with a laugh.
'No, the little ones.' He frowned, trying to remember.
'Lychees?'
'Yes! Aren't they delicious?'
'They have the texture of eyeballs.'
'You eat eyeballs here?'
'Some people do … you don't in your lands?'
'Sometimes we have to. Or at least, we did, before we found the scales. We ate everything we could get our hands on.'
Fyia's expression turned sad, so he nipped her lip. 'Will we be able to grow fruits like those in the glasshouses a certain Queen has promised?'
Fyia smiled as she shrugged. 'I'm not a great horticulturist, although I'm sure Venir could tell you.'
Venir had joined them on the airship, much to Cal's bafflement. 'Why is he here? He seems to be the worst snake of them all …'
'Because he spent time with the Emperor.'
It wasn't a straight answer, and Cal thought about pressing her on the matter, but she kissed him, and all thoughts but one flew from his mind. 'Have you decided yet?' he asked again.
Fyia pressed her forehead to his. 'I'm coming around to the idea,' she said, but refused to meet his gaze.
'Are you hiding from me?' He put a finger under her chin and forced her head up.
'No,' she said, petulantly. 'I think we should test the goods before committing. A lifetime of bad sex would be a travesty.'
'You could just build yourself a harem …'
'Hmm, you're right, I could …'
He dug his fingers into her ribs, making her giggle, the sound so delightful he did it again. He bent forward as she squirmed, dropping kisses on her neck, then jaw, then lips.
'Please,' she breathed.
Cal wasn't sure how he'd become the one to need convincing … hadn't the decision been mutual? Now it seemed pointless, for they'd already crossed the line of no return. He couldn't pretend he didn't have feelings for her, and the last few days without her had been torture.
He lowered his face to the visible flesh at the top of her shirt, kissing the crease of her breasts. She arched her back, pressing herself into him, and he pulled the fabric down, exposing the swell of one round breast. He kissed and nipped at her skin, but her clothes hampered his efforts. He growled in frustration, pushing her away just long enough to rid her of her shirt and brassier.
She unbuttoned his shirt, mewling as their hot, naked skin came together. He caressed her dragon scale, and she moaned into his neck, the sound setting him on fire.
He picked her up and took her to the bed, placing her on her front. He removed their remaining clothes, so he had an uninterrupted view of her pert, full ass and toned back. He straddled her thighs, massaging her, and she moaned again, arching against the mattress.
He leaned forward and ran his nose across her scale, gleaming gold in the midday sun. She shivered, and he kissed it, then licked it with the tip of his tongue. She arched harder, opening her legs as much as she was able, his cock pressing into the space between her thighs.
He lay forward, covering her with his torso, and moved his hips, the sensation of nudging against her opening overriding all logical thought. He slipped a hand beneath her pulsing hips, and she moaned as he caressed her sex.
'Cal,' she said into the bedding, her voice muffled.
