“Why would a can opener be helpful?” I asked, looking up just in time to see the helicopter starting to set down in the middle of the road. “Oh shit!” I screamed as Cash jerked the wheel and drove into the field, the truck bumping over the uneven ground. A spray of bullets in our direction had Cash grabbing me and shoving me back down.
“How far out?” Cash asked.
“She should be coming up on your ass any minute now.”
“Who is she?” I asked again.
“John Wayne.”
“The can opener?”
“Rae,” he answered. “Because she always opens a can of worms.”

CASH
The truck bouncedall over the uneven field. I had to get us the fuck out of here if we were going to have any chance of surviving. The back window cracked, then shattered as pierced the truck. I was practically holding Eva down on the floor boards to keep her from getting hit.
I pushed us to seventy miles an hour, hoping I could outrun the truck that was now on our tail. I heard the sound of the chopper behind me, lifting off the ground, and prayed Rae was close by. I had everywhere to go, but nothing to keep us safe.
“Cash!” Eva cried out, terrified as she huddled low.
“Just stay down!”
She pointed out my window where the helicopter was flying past us. I swore, trying to figure out a way out of this. I swore I would protect her, but right now, that didn’t seem like a possibility.
The helicopter turned, settling higher above us, ready to fire. I swerved out of its path, knowing it was a mere adjustment for them.
“John Wayne has arrived!” Dash shouted over the phone.
“Where the fuck is she?” I asked as I looked around.
“You’ll hear her in about—”
The helicopter exploded in a fiery blaze, falling from the sky just to the left of us. My tires spun in the dirt as I got further away from the crash site, but I turned right into a low spot in the field, filled with mud and puddles of water. The tires spun as I tried to push us through, but we jerked to a stop in a particularly wet spot.
“Fuck!” I yelled, slamming my hand on the steering wheel and I shifted into reverse, trying to get us out. A quick look out the driver’s side window only made things worse. There was an SUV barreling down on us. “Eva, get in the seat and strap in!”
She scrambled up into the seat as I shifted back and forth, rocking the truck to get us out. The SUV was nearly on us.
“Cash!” she screamed just as I looked up and stared down the front end of the SUV. I shifted one last time, finally gaining purchase as the truck lurched forward, but not fast enough. I felt the impact deep in my bones as the truck absorbed the impact and started to roll. The last thing I saw was Eva reaching out to grab onto my hand before something slammed into my head and everything went dark.
