Story: In Her Eyes

“I don’t know about that.”

“You were. That first day in your house, when we got interrupted, it was him, wasn’t it? He was drunk, and they called you to take him home. Someone else might have let the cops send him to jail to sober up. But you took care of him, knowing he wouldn’t do the same for you.”

“I did it for my mother to save her the embarrassment and trouble of getting him out.”

“Still. You’re a good son, and you were a wonderful grandson. Your Pops told me so.”

The corners of his eyes crinkle with his smile. “You’re incredible, you know?”

“I don’t know about that.” I lean in and give him a quick kiss. “What are you going to do now?”

He shrugs. “I have options. I could join the NYPD. I know people there. Or I could start my own private investigation firm. I know this girl who could be my partner.”

I smile. “Is that so?”

His beautiful eyes search my face, unhidden by sunglasses. “It is.”

My heart flutters like the wings of a thousand butterflies. “How long can you stay with me?”

“What about forever?”
