Story: Hunter's Mission
I turned off the grill and sat beside her, flicking Luna off her lap. “You can stay here.”
“Hunter—”
“I mean it, Layla. We’ve wasted too many years being apart. We have some serious catching up to do.”
She curled her lip into her mouth. “Really? Are you sure?”
“Absolutely.”
“Thank you.” She leaned her head on my shoulder. “I’m going to enjoy watching this view every day.”
“It’s incredible, isn’t it?”
“Yes, but I can’t do that all day long. I need to find a job.”
“Well . . . I have an idea.”
“Oh yeah?” She sat up.
“After I left the hospital, I went to Brighter Days Rehab Ranch, which is run by an amazing woman named Hannah. I bet she’d be interested in your natural remedies.”
Layla’s eyes brightened. “Do you think so?”
“I think it’s worth having a conversation with her.”
“Thanks, Hunter.” She heaved a sigh. “But before I do anything, I need to go to Blakely Pharmaceuticals.”
“Do you want me to come with you?”
She shook her head.
“Well, don’t you let them give you any shit. You face them head-on and tell them what that bastard Neville did.”
“Don’t worry, I will. Cody will support me.”
“And we’ll help you. Not just me, but everyone at Team Eagle. I’m certain Wyatt will get the data off your computer and Neville’s that can help prove what he was doing.”
She seemed to relax. “That would be amazing. Thanks. You guys are incredible.”
“Anything for you, Layla.”
Tears pooled in her eyes as she pressed her lips against mine. Our kiss was tender and filled with so much emotion, she seemed to melt into me.
As we eased apart, she whispered, “I love you. You truly have saved me.”
The truth was, Layla had saved me. I had been a broken man, wallowing in self-pity. Now I could take on the world. My scars and pain were no longer going to define me. And in the Amazon I’d proven that I could still do anything I put my mind to.
My scars were part of me, and with Layla at my side, everything was perfect.
It was time to make everything perfect for Layla.
I knew exactly how I could help, but I was certain she would resist my idea, so I had to make it happen without telling her.
I just hoped my plan didn’t backfire.
