Story: Her Trust
“That’s our Princess Tiana dress,” Leslie says coming up to my side.
“Who?” I frown, still inspecting the dress,
“Princess Tiana. The Princess and The Frog?” she says, as though I should know what she’s talking about.
“I don’t know what that is.”
“Oh.” She jolts in surprise. “Well, it’s a Disney movie, been out a long time now, but the costume is still really popular.”
I’m just here to ensure the girls have what theyneed. Not to make ostentatious purchases. “I’ll take one in her size.”
“Sure, you want the crown and frog purse to go with it?”
I screw my face up because that honestly sounds horrendous, but not one to mess with a coordinated set, I agree.
“Are there any other non-clothing items you need?”
“Like what?”
“Bags, toys, electronics?”
Right. Children need entertaining. They won’t be with me long, it would be ridiculous to get them too much, but they definitely need something. It’s not like I’m going to miss the money. “Yes. Bags and purses for each of them. Books too, of varying genres and at least two each that are educational. A laptop, a tablet and two phones?” I question that last one because that doesn’t seem right. “Do six-year-olds need phones?”
“Well, we have plenty of parents who buy phones for their children from even younger than that,” Leslie answers.
“A six-year-old does not need a phone, rainha,” Harvey steps close behind me.
“What if she needs to contact me?” I counter, the picture of that little face lost and alone without being able to call for help tugging tightly on something in my ribcage.
“That girl isn’t going anywhere without her sister and atrustedadult. If you’re getting one for Mabel, they’ll make do. Trust me, if you give her a phone, you’re giving her access to things she’s too young for. It’s a slippery slope.”
I nod, what he says makes sense. “One phone,” I tell Leslie. “And toys; whatever the most popular items are for their age groups.”
“You’re happy for me to select for you?”
“Yes.” Leslie may be slightly annoying, but I trust her judgement on this.
She smiles with a nod and walks off to make the final selections.
“I’m not entirely sure we’re going to fit this all in that flashy little sports car of yours.” Harvey sets his hands on his hips.
That is a fair point. I take out my phone and call Lee.
“Boss.”
“Send one of the guys to Brunel’s in the SUV, I want them here in half an hour.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
We hang up and I turn to find Harvey looking at me with an amused tilt to his lips. “What?”
“You are full of surprises,rainha?”
“How so?”
“I just wouldn’t have put you down as the type ofAuntto buy princess dresses and tiaras.”
To be honest, that shocked me too, but I take offence to his surprise. “Doesn’t fit in to the Ice Queen image you have of me?”
