"Who was it?" Gabriel asked the other men. "How many?"
"One man. Breeched the perimeter and cut the entire power," Alex said, his voice tight with the fervor of the recent activities.
"How did he get over the wall? That's impossible," Gabriel said.
"Apparently not." Alex shook his head. "I agree, though, it doesn't make sense."
"Did he get away?" Gabriel sat down next to her.
"He was prepared. He was wearing a wetsuit and went into the river."
"Charlotte thought it might be her ex-fiancé," Sin said.
"It wasn't. I was mistaken," she said then added, "you heard the conversation."
"Are you sure, lass?" Alex asked.
She nodded.
"One of Sokolov's men, most likely," the new man said.
"It doesn't feel right. It's not how he works." Sin frowned. "Why send a message through Charlotte, only to send a man here?"
"Aye, or maybe he knew you would lead him here?" Alex said sharply, his reprimand not lost. She saw the muscle in Sinclair's jaw tighten.
"I need to get her back to the infirmary." The doctor looked at Alex. "The sooner, the better."
"I'm fine. I don't want to go back there," Charlie said. "I would like to go back to Edinburgh. To the consulate."
"You'll stay here and mend." Alex pulled up a chair and sat down.
"And Imogen?" she asked.
He looked up, confused.
Gabriel explained the new developments he had learned about Charlie's roommate.
"They have her at an old distillery," she said, "in the outskirts of Edinburgh."
"Leith, but she won't be there now. They'll have moved her." Sin looked at the other gentlemen, an unspoken message sat heavy in his eyes.
"Carmichael, go check the distillery to be sure," Alex said. "Sin, text him the coordinates."
"Aye, sir," the man with black hair said. He gave Charlie a sad smile before leaving.
"Does what he carved on my stomach mean anything to you?" she asked. She was still unsettled from seeing it and feeling Sokolov's energy.
The men nodded.
"Aye, lass, it's the star of the Order of the Thistle," Gabriel explained.
"Order of the Thistle?" Her head was beginning to swim with all the activity.
"Aye. It's the Black Watch coat of arms," he said.
"And this means something to you?"
"It's our coat of arms," Alex said.
