Story: Bewitching the Ghost
Yes, she’d looked.
“A couple of my men have kids at home. I’m sure they’ll appreciate the cookies.”
Willow hoped the disappointment hadn’t played on her features. After all, if the hipster guy was single, what would she even do about it?
He was rude. He was surly. And he probably vaped or something off-putting like that.
No thank you.
Kyle stacked four of the tins in one hand like it was nothing, nodding as he shuffled towards the door.
“Well, I better head out. I promised my kids I’d take them to the pumpkin patch.”
“Sounds like fun. Oh, don’t forget this one.”
Willow held out the last cookie tin. Darn that vexatious man for leaving without it.
“I’ve got the four you gave me,” said Kyle. “One for each man.”
“Yes. One for each of the four workers, and one for you, too.” She shook the tin at him.
Kyle ticked his head to the side. “I only have three men.”
“I could have sworn I counted four,” she said, puzzled.
In fact, she knew she had. How could she forget the attention they gave Zephyr? All excepthim.
WherewasZephyr, anyway?
“Nope. Just three.”
A shiver snaked up Willow’s spine. She’d heard about things like gaslighting, but had no reason to suspect her contractor would try to mess with her head like that.
“Three? But the guy that was just here…”
She proceeded to list them all off, just to be sure she wasn’t going crazy, but Kyle stopped her before she could finish.
“What guy? I’m the only one that came today.”
“The man with the mustache and green eyes.”
“Not one of mine.”
“But…”
“You know, Mysthaven is a relatively safe town. But maybe you should invest in a double lock. I’ll pick one up for you next time I’m at the hardware store.”
“If he wasn’t one of your men, who was he?”
He shook his head and seemed a little concerned, bless him. “I didn’t see him, sorry. But I can check all the rooms before I go. Just to be safe.”
“No, I’m okay.”
Willow might have been a poor excuse for a witch, but she knew better than to mess with the protection enchantment Esme placed on her before she left home. It would last a few days, anyhow.
Just then they heard a crash from upstairs and Kyle quickly set down the cookies and ran to investigate. Willow followed behind him ready to be righteously pissed off at the hipster hottie, but when they entered her new bedroom, they only found Zephyr playing with a box he’d knocked over.
Willow was mortified for Kyle to see the contents spilled out on the floor. Still, he didn’t say anything about the racy covers of her romance novels or the various witchy things her sisters must have slipped in there without her knowledge. She’d have a few words with them next time she saw them.
