Story: Beowolf
Panther Force cheered. And Nutsbe shushed.
“That targeting is a lucrative job to many. The Canadians were offered two hundred thousand dollars to discover the details of the Eastern Virginia case and their list of witnesses so that those witnesses could be targeted for assassination. A half-million if they got all the information and then killed the prosecution’s case and it failed to move through the grand jury.”
Nutsbe reached out for Olivia’s hand and squeezed it hard.
She smiled thinly to let him know she was all right.
He wasn’t all right. He’d never be alright thinking of that night or this case.
Knowing what might have happened was still a dragon roaring in his psyche.
It was hard as hell shutting up and watching her go off and do her job when Nutsbe knew the dangers.
He was sure it was the same for her.
Olivia knew about the Russo-Albanian case and that the DOJ was working to extradite McMahan back to the States to face trial where Nutsbe would be the star witness. And until that case resolved, he would remain a target.
Sanchez tapped his finger onto the desk. “Now, there are some controversial means by which our intelligence communities gather information. But this is an example of how the system was put into use to take down a cell of dangerous actors who wished to commit terrorism on American soil.”
“Thank you for your perspective, Representative Sanchez. Up next, the latest on the massive storm heading for Florida’s east coast.”
Panther Force gave a last round of whoops. Nutsbe looked down at Beowolf, who lay at Olivia’s side.
Right now, Olivia was safe. And Nutsbe wasn’t going to lose this moment of celebration for fear of tomorrow.
Holding Olivia’s hand, he stood. “As we’re celebrating tonight, we want to tell you all that Olivia and I have decided to get married.”
Olivia lifted her left hand, flashing her engagement ring. Standing beside Nutsbe, she said, “And we’ve decided not to wait. So this weekend, we’ll be quasi-eloping. Our maid of honor and the best man,” she nodded toward Thorn, “will be in tow. When Nutsbe returns Monday morning, we will be husband and wife.”
“Here's to your happily ever after,” Margot said, raising her glass.
Nutsbe leaned over and whispered to Olivia, “Not for us.”
“No,” she said. “We want to ride all the waves and experience everything this crazy life has to offer.”
The kiss she gave Nutsbe was everything he could ever want.
Olivia Gladstone was Nutsbe’s third precious miracle.
