A knot formed in her gut. “So Mary and her son Jon are a threat, aren’t they?”
Juan shrugged. “We don’t know. All we know is that when Jon turned back Ed’s group, he told them they couldn’t escape God’s wrath. That they had to go back and pay for their sins.”
“Because Mary thought the horde would destroy the Fort.”
“Right.”
“But it didn’t.”
“Exactly.”
“So if the horde didn’t inflict God’s wrath on the Fort than maybe they’ll take God’s judgment into their own hands.”
“That’s a possibility. And since it’s a possibility-”

“Exactly.”
Emma took his hand in hers to discover they were both trembling. Now it was clear why Juan had chosen to approach her. Perhaps the Fort wasn’t as safe as they thought and time was of the essence. She wasn’t about to lose her new chance at life and community and would fight to defend it.
“So then we’ll be ready, won’t we?” Emma said, her voice cold steel.
Pride lingered in Juan’s eyes as he smiled at her, obviously pleased with her reaction. “Yes, we will.”
“Plus, y’all got something on your side you didn’t have before,” Emma said, lifting her chin with confidence.
“What’s that?”
“A gawddamn fearless zombie killer.”
