They had to close the city hall in Springfield, evacuate schools, and lock down hospitals because of Trump’s unfounded slander of the Ohio town’s Haitian population.

Trump’s baseless debate claims that Haitians were eating pets provoked a wave of bomb threats, even after the woman who started the rumor told a Wall Street Journal reporter that her cat had been found safe in her basement and that she had apologized to her Haitian neighbors.

Another woman who had amplified the rumor on Facebook also apologized, saying she’d never had any evidence for her post.

None of that stopped Trump. His anti-immigrant rhetoric became even more intense in the days that followed.

He appeared to revel in the chaos he could provoke.

It reinforced my belief that it was a cunning strategy to distract from the fact that he had no plan to make things better for the American family.
