She spends her days performing surgery and staying behind carefully constructed boundaries that keep what’s left of her safe, even though she’s not sure how either of those things make her feel anymore. There is one thing she’s absolutely certain of, though: she doesn’t date. So it doesn’t matter that a downtrodden Beckett Davis ends up in the same elevator as her, and, in a moment of weakness, she invites him to volunteer with her patients.

She might see right through him, and he might understand her in a way that no one else ever has, but they’re just business acquaintances.
